I'm so glad you're asking- our lo is 4 and a half and weighs 36 lbs and I still have him in the britax. Hubby keeps telling me we should get a more slender / big kid car seat....

I'm pretty sure the Marathon goes up to 65 pounds so as long as your child hasn't outgrown the height, you still have a while for that seat.

Yeah - poor kid will be trapped in that thing til he's 20... Eats like a horse and is still soooo skinny #jealous lol
Hubby was wondering about a more streamlined car seat for our 4&1/2 year old- save a few inches of room in the car. I argued that a) it goes up to 60lbs and b) it's a very safe seat
I still think he wants to get something a little more "big boy"

Re: britax marathon
We needed to use the britax marathon for our second DD, so we moved our older one into a britax high back booster with a five point harness. It is not that much slimmer, but gave us a couple of more inches because it doesn't have the sides that flair out. It also has two cup holders and she definitely things it is her "big girl" seat!

I moved my son at 2 3/4 because his brother needed it. I got the Graco Argos (like the Nautilus) for his next seat. His brother is 2 3/4 now and is still in it. He will move to the Argos in 2016 when the seat expires.

Regardless of what the listed weight limit is, a child has outgrown the seat when the straps are no longer able to come out of the seat from above their shoulders. Britax seats are known to have short harness heights so you may want to check that.
As far as a next seat, depending on the height/weight of the child and your budget you can look at the Harmony Defender, Graco Nautilus/Argos or the Britax frontier/pioneer/pinnacle

Re: britax marathon
DS is 3.5 years old, and about 41 lbs (solid mass). He's been in the Marathon since 8-9 months, and is officially too big now. Ordered boosters for him that will be delivered tomorrow.....
The harness of the Marathon just confines him too much in winter clothes (not jackets.....just sweatshirts).

DS is 4 and was in the Marathon until DD turned 6 months back at the start of the summer. He too went into at 6 months.
Now she is in the Marathon and DS is in the Britax Frontier

By booster seats do you mean a combination seat (has harnesses now but will turn into a booster in a few years
Typically when harnesses become confining it is because the straps are no longer coming from above their shoulders which is a potentially dangerous situation in the event of an accident
