Winter Coats & Carseats

This will be DS' first winter in a convertible car seat and I'm wondering how to buckle him in safely with a thick winter coat. Is my only option to carry him out in coat, take it off and buckle him in car seat, and then put the coat back on when I"m ready to take him out of the car? Is this what everyone does or is there an easier process? TIA

We put them in fleece jackets, the winter coats on top - unbuttoned for easy removal, try to warm up the car in advance and then once they're in the seats, we take off the coats, buckle them up and then put the coats back on. Very annoying, but we have seen how much slack there is with those big, winter coats.

Re: Winter Coats & Carseats

You shouldn't use a thick winter coat in the car seat ever.
Either take it off and put it over him once he is strapped in or get a thin yet warm coat like the Lands End Squall- something with a thinsulate like lining.

I usually get the 3 in 1 jackets. It's nice b/c the fleece lining is warm and the top part is easy to take on and off.

You can also do the trick shown in pictures in this thread:

Car seat coat trick

I sometimes use this trick and other times he is in very thin layers. Either way, I know how long the yanking strap needs to be to make sure the straps are as tight as they are in the summer. Meaning, in our car seat, I know the end of the yanking strap has to reach a certain point on his headrest. If it doesn't reach that point, I know I haven't yanked enough and I need to make his straps tighter.

This is a great trick and to be honest I do it with my kids BUT I suggest "testing" the coat to make sure it's safe.

Put the coat on and buckle into the car seat. Adjust the straps so they are snug like you normally would. Unbuckle and have child get out of the seat without loosening the straps. Take the coat off and rebuckle child into the seat. Take note of any extra slack there may be and if you would feel comfortable with that slack while driving. In the event of an accident that is how much the coat may compress allowing for that extra room in the harness.

That car seat coat trick is pretty clever! I'm going to have to try that.

Try to warm up the car ahead of time and use a fleece or some type of thinner coat while in the car seat, then cover with heavier coat or a blanket. It is a lot of taking the coat on and off...

this is what we are doing this year. Last year we would warm up the car and then just take their jackets off in the car, but this year i wanted to make sure they stayed warm in the car and got the 3 in 1 jackets from Childrens place. I just out the heavier part of the jacket on when we get out of the car. Annoying but they're safe in their seats.
