Toddler speech question

Toddler speech question

My daughter is typically developing in every area with the exception of expressive language. She understands everything we say to her. At this point she primarily points and "grunts" when she wants something. There's a few random sounds here and there. I'm in the process of having her reevaluated for speech, but just curious to see if other parents had similar experiences and around when their child did start speaking.

Thanks so much!

How old is she? My son didn't really start saying more than 10 words until he was 24 months. And then it was an explosion. He is great with language now.

Toddler speech question

Dd wasn't saying much at 17 months within the past 2 weeks we have gotten an explosion of words but we still gets grunting and pointing. How old is your child?

Re: Toddler speech question

My daughter is 18 months so I'm concerned. She still doesn't say "mama" or "dada" and like I said mostly points and grunts for what she wants along with some random sounds when she's playing.

Thanks for the feedback ladies!

Re: Toddler speech question

DD has been getting speech since about 20 mos. When evaluated at 18 mos., she was just babbling and grunting. Receptive language was always strong. She ended up qualifying (mostly because she wasn't cooperating with testing, so even the receptive came out low on formal measures). Now at 23 mos., she's finally starting to say more things - she has down all the family members, and can imitate simple words with sounds she knows (b, p, c, d, m, etc.). The speech therapists advice was to try to elicit sounds, not words, and through play. So things like "pop" while playing with bubbles, "boo" while playing peek a boo, etc.
