How are these events? Do a lot of stores participate? Do they stand at the door, or you have to go inside the store?

Answering myself in case someone searches next year...
Didn't go until 5ish and most stores had signs saying no candy or ran out of candy. You had to go in the stores with a pumpkin sign. A lot of times there was someone inside near the door to hand out candy.
