DS had his first ambulance ride tonight!
We were having dinner and my son had some fish that my BILs father had caught. There must have still been a small bone in it and the kids were in the kitchen at the kiddie table adn I heard my super hero 4 year old nephew yelling "are you alright, are you OK" and ran in to see what was going on. My son was choking on a fish bone. His airway was clear but he was screaming in pain bc it was still stuck. Next thing we new he was vomiting up blood and LOTS of it. We called the ambulance who was there in under 5 minutes.
By the time they got there, he had dislodged the bone and was much better.
I almost felt silly for calling them since he was OK by the time they got there. They said no, you always call when there is choking and vomiting in case they aspirate anything into their lungs, especially the stuck food particle. If it goes to their lungs it could do some serious damage adn you dont want to be in a car with no medical help even though he seems fine bc you dont know what is going on internally, especially after vomiting up blood.
So, that was our 8TH!! trip to the ER with this kid, first ambulance ride though.
Definitely going to take a refresher CPR/Heimlich course though bc I didnt realize how unprepared I was had his body not taken over and starting vomiting to clear it on its own.
So, three lessons - choking is silent - had my nephew not started yelling, I would have had no idea since they were in the kitchen and the adults were in the dining room. Two - always call an ambulance for choking, even if they seem fine and three, take a refresher first aid course!!!!

Oh thank God that your nephew was screaming! And thank God he was ok. How scary for you 
Even if you knew the Heimlich, I'd still have taken him in case his throat had gotten irritated or even like the EMS told you, aspirated food! YIKES

Glad he is okay. So terrifying. We had a similar experience several months ago (choking, ambulance, ER - except it was a barette embellishment, not food), and it still haunts me.

Thanks everyone! Choking has always been my #1 fear and I was PARANOID about it and my family used to laugh at me for it, not so funny now. Its even scarier than I imagined it. Thankfully, it all turned out OK in the end!

ugh, hugs. Its more awful than I imagined it. I will never forget his face when I ran into the kitchen. He just had sheer terror and pain on his face and then all of the blood being thrown up. It was awful. Hes totally over it like it never happened (was that night) and was all about how cool the ride in the ambulance with the sirens was. Thatll haunt me for a long time though too!

Im thinking of ordering him a superhero cape right now. He would love that! I tried to tell him what an awesome thing he did and how he is a real super hero but he wasnt getting it, LOL!
