wow, be careful with those "boutique" dresses...
i just read on one of my buy and sell fb pages that someones daughter was hospitalized bc the dress contained 400 times the allowed amount of formaldehyde in it!!!
i posted on another thread, that those dresses all come from aliexpress or other similar sites. they come from China and are sold for like $10!
please be careful when ordering, these clothes are not regulated as they should be.

I found this article, it seems that all clothes contain this. I wonder if the little girl had an allergy?

I hope washing takes a lot of it out. My DD is wearing old navy leggings right now. She has their jeggings and many styles & colors of their leggings.

The info in the article posted above says it was also found in Old Navy, and Gymboree clothing, amongst others. Those are not cheap China clothes.
"It would be impossible to get rid of formaldehyde. It's in everything, clothing, shampoos, makeup, topical medication," said Dr. Prawer. "But, in clothing it's not harmful, to the average person, to everyone who is not allergic to it."

I feel like most clothes ARE made in China though. Almost everything is lately. and old navy would NOT surprise me if it was made in China...their quality sucks

Yeah..I agree. So much is made in China.
And I don't think the OP point was that formaldehyde was in the clothing, just the levels it had. 400x the allowed amount! That's insane! If it's true. Not saying she's lying. But maybe the OP in her story exaggerated a bit.
Either way. Hope the child is OK

I'm planning to go to a "boutique" and buy one of those lace rompers used in photoshoots. Is that the type of dress you're warning against? I know they all come from China, as a lot of stuff does, and I'm not buying from a major retailer that might do their own testing... DD would only wear it a short time, so shouldn't be a problem. Just wondering if this is the "boutique" stuff you're posting about.

i have no idea what kind of dress. i was just relaying info bc i know alot of people buy from them. i used to as well.
basically after reading the comments, the mom who it happened to said that they had the dress tested and it did in fact have 400 times the amount allowed. apparently she wore the dress to a wedding and when the formaldehyde mixed with her sweat it entered her body. she had never had any allergic reaction before, but the levels were sooo high so that is why it happened.
i am just passing the info along to others bc it makes me think twice before ordering....i buy directly from ali express and will no longer bc its a chance i do not want to take knowing this info

Re: wow, be careful with those "boutique" dresses...
If you're shopping on etsy and buying from a mom doing cute outfits in the US you don't have to worry. However, do check where the vendors are from. I ordered from Liberia once for something I could of easily ordered from someone locally.
As far as boutique stores - like anything everyone can call themselves boutique but it doesn't mean it's true. you are always best going with well known trusted companies that obviously have a real webpage with a social media presence or a store front that you can clearly see the designer marked on the clothing.

OMG when you said the part about the sweat mixing with the formaldehyde it reminded me of this Urban Legend!

I have been reading a lot about this since this was posted, and the US doesn't regulate it. Higher levels are mostly found in wrinkle free items that are sold anywhere and everywhere. It is in linens, hats, clothing, undergarments etc... Can be bought at Nordstrom, Saks, Forever21, Buy Buy Baby. It also says unless you have a skin condition most of the time this is not going to affect you. NYTimes did a whole article as well as the link I posted above. Scary that the US doesn't regulate.

I just looked at a Pair of brand new DKNY Jeans for my daughter, and the tag clearly says "wash before wearing" I am guessing b/c they dye jeans different colors. This is all so crazy. I wonder why the US doesn't regulate this.

I'm sure they are, but I was moreso commenting that they aren't the alliexpress type dresses, etc.

Omg so scary. Thanks for the info. It's scary how there's also formaldehyde in our food supply as well. Ugh.
I love the boutiques too because I get things no one else has. So disappointing!!! I just ordered my dd a christmas dress. Hope that's ok. Does anyone know if washing it helps?

Every single children's fb boutique that's popular with people I know is full of cheap crap from China. You can get any of the outfits on ebay for like $10 from Hong Kong.

To be quite honest, everything I have for my daughter is nice quality. I find Old Navy, The Childrens Place, Gymboree etc... to have stuff that feels much cheaper to me.
Some of the Brands I have gotten are Zara & Bonnie Baby too, depending on the outfit. I think some of it it stuff that never made name brand stores.

All clothing should be washed before being worn. Also all fabric, like couches and chairs and car seats and blankets...all chemically treated.

How do you wash a couch or chair?
Do most people wash convertible car seat covers? Those things don't come off or go back on easily at all.

I roll the dice. I sit on my unwashed couch and my DD uses an unwashed car seat. We live on the edge....

This made me everything is getting out of hand these days. I hate when I have to wash the car seat cover... Like when dd puked in it took me an hour to figure out how it all went back together. I wouldn't wash it if I didn't have to lol
