Hilton Heads, SC Update with another question
So I think I'm leaning here for our summer family vacation. The plan is to drive from NY to cut cost on air flights. Any recommendations on hotels and things to do? My girls are 2, 5 and 8.
Thanks
ETA: I'm ready to book my hotel but noticed there's a huge difference in price ($600) if I go during July vs August. Anyone know why? I would like to go in July but if I'm going to save $600 I can very well go towards the end of August as well.

Re: Hilton Heads, SC
We went as a family trip years ago, and we stayed at the Disney property there (we are dvc members). We definitely appreciated that the resort had lots of activities going on (kayaking, dolphin watching, etc), so you may want to consider that when looking at hotels/resorts. Having them there would probably be easier than trying to come up with something each day, especially with the older 2 kids.

If we stay at a different hotel, we can't do all those activities as well? I was looking at the Marriott's Harbour Point and Sunset and got a 2 bedroom which would be the same price if I stayed at the Disney property but would stay in a standard room. I love that I have access to the kitchen at the Marriott.

Usually you can only do activities if you are a guest at that hotel. I would think the Marriott would have activities as well.

We stayed at the Disney property when we went and absolutely loved it. There's a cute interactive children's museum on the island called The Sandbox that DS really liked (he had just turned two when we went, but there were kids of all ages there). We ate at One Hot Mama's and the food was good, but we didn't like the dessert.

The prices are typically lower in August since schools down there go back early to mid-month.
Also - it's hurricane season.

My guess is that schools are back in session down south by end of August so that's why you have the price drop

We have gone annually for 3 years & LOVE it!!!!! I live now in NC, so it's only a 5hr drive. Check out vbro & some other rental companies. You can rent for a week for less than a hotel! There is so much to do, boat/dolphin cruises, rent bikes/tandums, the sand is very firm & no rocks/shells so you can take them right on the beach, tons of paths too.
It's very family friendly, old oyster factory, skull creek boathouse, crab house, off the top of my head are favorites.

Don't forget, there are also hurricanes sometimes, unbearable heat and bugs in August. Sometimes it can be a factor. Either way, it's a great family vacation spot.

Thanks ladies. I booked the Omni hotel for July. Going to look into the house rental and see if I can save some money that way.

Re: Hilton Heads, SC Update with another question
FYI....as far as hurricanes. HHI doesn't actually get hit by hurricanes, the locals told us that because of how it sit. But you could get rain. We had 2 days the last time. But because there was no thunder or lightening, we still rode bikes under the tree-canopied paths. GREAT TIME.
I've been there in May, July, & August...and it's not called Palmetto Dunes for nothing. Doesn't matter the month.
I've never stayed, but Omni looks beautiful!
