Sleep training advice- sorry, long
DD2 will be 6mos on Thursday and her sleep schedule has gotten progressively worse. At this point, once she wakes in the middle of the night I'm not even able to return to bed so we both spend the rest of the night in the glider in an uncomfy mostly-asleep daze. I plan to do some form of modified sleep training.
Right now she eats around 7pm, we burp and snuggle daddy/sister for a few minutes, then she and I head upstairs to rock in the dark with white noise and I put her in the crib once she is asleep. I'm up there 20-40 minutes. Then the chaos starts around 3am.
Eventually I would like to be able to a)put her down drowsy but not asleep b)have her sleep through the night. She is a more needy baby than my first was and she prefers me over others (which is wonderful, until it's not). I don't want her stressing out more than necessary so I want to focus on these two things separately. Which should I do first... get her down without the rocking or sleep without waking up in the middle of the night?
For the record, DD1 was very independent but never wanted to sleep. We allowed her to stay awake and never set firm boundaries about where or when or how she should sleep and now we really pay for it. I can't do that again which is why DD2 was in the crib with an appropriate bedtime asap. I want to do what's best for her AND the family now before it's too late.

i am not sure if there is a right or wrong, but personally i would think being able to put her down drowsy instead of already asleep is the way to start. once she knows how to put herself to sleep without you rocking her etc, it should (hopefully) help when she wakes in the middle of the night

Yes, this is what my ped had told me when we were going through the same thing. He said night wakenings were not the time to start CIO, you have to tackle bedtime first. When they fall asleep in your arms and then wake up in the middle of the night by themselves, they don't know how to put themselves back to sleep. He compared it to teaching a kid how to ride a bike. You give them a push in the beginning to start them off, but you still have to tend to them when they lose their balance or fall a little ways down the road. Eventually, after that initial push, it's a smooth ride for everyone! Good luck! It's not easy at all, but CIO at bedtime worked for my DD.

I had the worst sleep issues and CIO was a disaster for us. I contacted Rebecca at Sleep Cadets. She was recommended on here. I chose private help because we were desperate however she runs parent workshops that are fantastic and over same stuff.
She used a gradual release method with us and cleaned up our bedtime routine. I now can put him in the crib awake, linger for a few minutes, but he puts himself out. He has recently started sleeping through more often than not, but if he wakes MOTN it's been much better.
Good luck!

With my ds we did CIO way before we put him to bed initially awake or drowsy.
My ds always fell asleep downstairs with us and then we'd put him to bed asleep. We did cio if he woke at any point during the night.
Because our issue was never early in the night we felt it was more important to get more sleep overall and deal with the initial put to bed later on.
It worked out. Imo I think deal with whatever you think is the bigger issue.
