Flu Shot or Spray
Right now the nose spray is available at our Ped's office. My boys are 5 and 3 and have been getting the vaccine since 6 months old.
My 5yr old DS HATES going to the doctors. Just hates it. Gets so whiney and upset, but then is fine. He is more afraid of getting a band aide then the actual shot.
When he has a cold and I give him the spray he has to be held down.
I was thinking the shot for them, but is there a big difference? Should I just do the spray?

Re: Flu Shot or Spray
The CDC is recommending the spray for kids 2 to 8 this year (I don't know if they used to recommend the shot or never made a recommendation before but this year it's the spray). I think it has to do with the fact that the spray covers 4 different flu viruses and the shot 3?
Regardless, if you have a reason to do one over the other I think you should go with your gut.

Re: Flu Shot or Spray
My kids have received the spray after there first flu vacation.
The nurses are so good at administering it and it really is 2 seconds. I always tell them to smell it as they spray and tell me what they smell. I usually make up some things and they go along with it.

Re: Flu Shot or Spray
From what I know the nasal spray is a live vaccine and the shot is a killed vaccine. I prefer the shot. Its done in a second. She would freak out with anything up her nose. I know I would

Yup, and same here.
Because the shot is a live virus it is more effective - hence why they're recommending it for children 2-8. We're going the shot route. My kid threw up on the dentist - something up her nose, even for a split second, would just not be pretty.

Re: Flu Shot or Spray
Dd is 4. The nurse asked which one for the flu clinic on Monday. I asked which do they suggest. She said the mist is live vaccine so she thought the shot would better for us. She said to hold off on the spray until dd knows about the spray and asks for it. The shore ill be over in a second. I hate nasal spray so I can't Imagine it lol

Re: Flu Shot or Spray
My 3 year old DD got the spray this year bc of the new recommendation. The nurse had her practice sniffling and then sprayed in each nostril. We had no issues. But my Dd kinda likes when we use the saline to clean her nose...if your DS hates nasal sprays, i'd definitely mention that to the Dr and maybe opt for the shot.
ETA- since the spray is a live virus, we were told to avoid anyone on chemo or immuno suppressants for 3 weekS...something else to consider. But since we don't know anyone immuno compromised, I opted for the spray since it was recommended.

Same here! I fear my girls would pull back and not get the whole vaccine into their nose. My girls got the shot this year and neither cried.
