What do you think this behavior means?

At one point during the early mornings DS becomes restless and fidgety in the morning. His eyes are closed so when I give him the paci he sucks it vigorously. Really loud. Then for about 2 hours he sleeps on and off.

It usually starts after 4am/4:30. Is this a hunger behavior. When he finally wakes up he doesn't cry. He will for about a few seconds and then he'll smile and coo. It's so weird. Should I be feeding him during the night?

He is 3 1/2 months old. During the day he takes 4 bottles at 6 ounces each.

Re: What do you think this behavior means?

My DD is EBF and you saw on my post how much fun I am having with sleeping through the night and feeding etc.

My dd takes the paci too and I do know the times she sucks on it vigorously she was hungry. Did you try feeding at this time?

Edited to add: DD has always woken at this time to feed and she does feed at this time .I would bet he is hungry. Are you feeding him at night at all?

Re: What do you think this behavior means?

I feed him before his bedtime. Like last night he had 7 ounces at his last feeding which was around 7:30 and by 9:30 he was asleep. Do you think that feeding was too early for him?

Also I did try feeding him once at like 3:30-4 but he didn't want to go back down again...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: What do you think this behavior means?

You probably need some help from moms who bottle fed but at that age DD was feeding at 7.30pm, 10.30pm, 2.30pm, 5.00am and then 7.00am!!But she was and is EBF so I dont know about how many bottles.

Sorry hope someone else can help.

Those sound like classic tired signs to me. For instance, if Noah wakes up at 6.30 am, by 8 am he is figety, he cries, he will have milk happily even if he has just eaten and he is just miserable! I would think thats a tired cue indeed.

No he's doing this in his sleep. He's half awake/asleep and when I give him the paci. He sucks it vigorously...

If he is not crying while he is doing this then I wouldnt worry about it let him suck. I think he is also just tired. Luka will also sometimes let out a cry or two in his sleep or even fusses and then in 5 minutes or so he is out like nothing happened. What happens if you just give him the pacifier and let him be?

Ava does this, too. Only she starts around 6 and does it for about an hour to two before she is ready to wake up and eat. It's definitely because she's hungry, but I guess she's more tired than hungry or else she'd wake up. I don't think it's a problem.

Re: What do you think this behavior means?

My DS didn't sleep through the night until a couple of weeks ago and he would wake two to three times after him bedtim of 8/8:30 p.m.

He's 7 months now and I told the doctor about the problem several months in a row and it all came down to the fact that he's hungry. I was told to wake him at 11:00 p.m. before I went to bed to feed him and I probably should have but never did. Maybe try that. Now that he's older at our last visit (after still being tired after 6.5 months) I said to the Dr. that there has to be something. I work (don't know if you do) and I'm tired. Now that he's older, I give him his usual veggies and then fruit and cereal. We end the night with a couple of ozs. before bed.

Routine is great too. I don't know if you are there yet but I always do bath/bottle/bed so he knows that when he hits the crib that's bedtime. And, that's really the only time he's in there so he knows. It's the hardest part if you ask me. Things are finally better.

Try the last feeding thing. You just have to work through it and try not to get too frustrated - it will get better. Take it from a new mom that didn't sleep for seven months....
