When your kids see something disturbing on tv
At a restaurant tonight, one of the TVs had a hunting/nature show on. DS (age 3) loves bisons. The show had bisons being shot and then showed a man skinning and cutting up the animal. It was horrible for me to watch. Both kids were staring at the tv horrified. They both love animals and it was so awful.
How do you explain this to a child?
I know I can't shelter them forever but I would prefer not to expose them to this. This is also why I rarely watch the news in front of them.

Re: When your kids see something disturbing on tv
This is my fear. I wouldn't know what to say but would've quickly distracted them and give them my phone to play games it. They only get it out as last resort and that would've been it. Reminds me of when DS was on my iPad and he wanted Peppa Pig so I put it on YouTube. Next thing I know after he clicked on a few videos he was watching a video of dead pigs. I was horrified and told him the pigs were sleeping. Ugh! Thank goodness he bought it. He was 4 so never mentioned it again.

I lie. I know I am horrible. I say it was a pretend game or something. My 5 year old came into our room one night and I was watching CSI. I fell asleep with the TV on, so I didn't know he was there. The next day all he did was talk about how the man killed his mom and so on. I explained to him it was fake and pretend. I guess I still dont know how to handle those situations. Sorry your kids had to see that. I don't even like that stuff.
Maybe explain how people kill animals to eat and buse the skin as blankets, etc...

I'd probably tell the truth (or some variation) ... I'd probably say that the people needed to eat and they had no other option and even though it's sad, it had to happen so that the people would not get sick.

Why were they showing that on tv at a restaurant? I think I would've puked.
Anywho, depending on their age, I prob would've said, like a PP said, it's make believe. Just a tv show.
