Re: Reading

When I was still pregnant!

Then I'd read to her when she was an infant, just lying there.

Then, around 10 mos., she had no patience to be read to, but loved flipping through books independently, so we did that every night with a few books.

Now, at 20 mos. she rarely sits through a story being read, but enjoys the interactions of pointing to objects that I name ("show me the tree"), or she will point and I will label the item, and she will attempt to say it.

The important thing is that she sees reading as a nice fun activity, and she grows up around books. She's getting the conventions (turning right to left), that there are printd words that go with pictures, etc.

From the beginning. It's always been very important to me to have it part of her bedtime routine.

Reading

LOL seriously?
I told her stories and talked to her but read? Nope.. we started i guess when before she was three and actually WANTED to know the story? She loved all the Disney golden books. She'd ask for Jungle book again and again.

I heard all this "you should read" but it was pointless. She hated me doing it. She wanted to talk to her but not hold a book... she wanted eye contact and expressions. I did technically tell her the same stories you'd read, but no.. no reading to her sincerely before say 2 and a half maybe?

Now she won't sleep until I read to her.. something anything just read to me mama. I also make her read some words back to me along the way.

ETA: we'd make up stories, she'd give me names, places, actions I'd fill in the details, adventure and a moral.

Plus how does one read with a light off? I use a flash light but night time is dark time in this house. Its tough. Still we do love our reading time.

Reading

I started reading to DD her first week home. We usually read after her second feeding of the day or before her last feeding of the day. She listens and looks at the pictures. She is nearly six months old and will pick up and open her soft baby books and babble and coo. It is really cool to see she "gets it".

Since he was a couple weeks old.

He's 22 months now and absolutely loves books. He will sit patiently while you read and you can tell he's paying attention to the story. All I have to ask him is if he want to read "Over in the Meadow" and I get the biggest smile. It's something he's always been into, whether it's someone else reading to him or him going through his books himself.

Re: Reading

We read a lot to the kids.

At first, it was mostly the pictures. DD couldn't stop admiring books at 4-5 months old.

Stories with sing-song words come next (brown-bear, brown-bear, what do you see?)

Then story lines.

Now, at 4, DS wants to hear complex stories & I'm getting him to read words in them.

we tried from day 1, but it didn't go well. So we would try here and there. At 8 months DS became book obsessed (esp brown bear brown bear). Since then we read everyday!

But more when she was old enough to understand the story.
I tried when she was a baby and it was a waste.
She would pull the book out of my hand, try to eat it, throw it.
She didn't get it.

I was too embarassed to say this after reading the responses, but same for me. Now at 2 years old, DS will let me get through about one page before he gets up and walks away.

Re: Reading

DS#1 right away. We'd read 2 books each night. DS#2, we kind of tried to, but it wasn't as consistent.

Probably a lot is just personality in tool, but DS#1 LOVES books. He would spend hours just looking at them and he would memorize them and "read" them back to us. Never really ripped them apart or ate them (well, when he was teething he probably would try to gnaw on them occasionally) but DS#2 doesn't really enjoy them as much. He's more apt to grab and tear them. I still try to read to him as part of his bedtime routine, but he usually just wants to nurse (maybe that's actually WHY he's not interested in the books as much!! :)

I started when he was able to sit in my lap so I could open the book in front of us... Maybe around 4 or 5 months? To this day he loves reading books together.

I think this is fine!!!

My ped always said language development and bonding depended a lot on how much parents spoke to their children! So, telling stories sounds great to me!!

To answer the question, we started reading to DS when he was about 6 months old. Before that, i just gave him soft baby books to flip through.
He always wanted to eat the book, so I gave him one to chomp on while we read him another..Chat Icon

My younger son was read to earlier, because I held him on my lap while I read to my 2 year old.

Both of them really got into books/stories once they were 3+. Their attention spans and ability to sit through a story was established then.

Reading

Since she came home from the hospital. It's always the last thing that we do right before bed. DD loves reading so much. She's a very unusual 4 year old in that she will sit and listen to a fairly long book and always wants more. Now she's excited because she's starting to read some of the words herself. It's really fun to watch the progression.

I started very young. It was great when DD would listen and when she learned to do things like in pat the bunny and turning pages for me. She rarely lets me get through a book now (nearly 2 years old). She grabs it and flips through herself as I try to talk about what's on the page quickly enough to keep up with her : ).

Yup, same here! Or he is just more interested in flipping the pages pretty much.

Reading

Since I was 12 weeks pregnant. He's had the same bedtime books since I was about 5 months pregnant. I recited them to him every night before I went to bed and did the same every night since the night he was born. He's 18 months and often reads to himself. I recited his bedtime books with the light off until recently. Now he'd rather sit with me and look through the books as I read them as opposed to jut listening to him. I must read this kid 20 books a day. We went through a point where he was uninterested, but I always got in the 4 books before bedtime and 1-2 through the day even if I was just reading near him.
