Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
Just curious. I elected not to have one (it was suggested to me because of my age) - Just wonder what everyone else's thoughts are.
The dr said I had a couple of weeks to change my mind.

i elected not to either - especially b/c of my age. my doctor told me b/c i am young it is not as necessary and that the risks are much lower. so we decided against it.

A good friend of mine declined one as well. The outcome would not change anything for them.

dont 2nd guess - there even risks involved with having it done. i felt that way too - if it was going to change the outcome - why risk it????

Re: Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
I did not need to have an amnio, but we declined all other testing like the Down's testing, etc. I wasn't sure what to do about testing when I was pregnant with Jack and my doctor just told me to think about what I would do with the informaiton I received. In our case, no matter what the outcome of the testing, we would not take action, like end the pregnancy. Therefore, why test if you are going to do nothing with the information. That was our approach. So it may help you to decide if you think of it that way.

That's exactly the way I thought about it - that I wouldn't abort. I also don't want worry my entire pregnancy if something came back positive.

We are not going to do the test either, we are young and the outcome would never change anything

Re: Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
I elected not to have one for the same reason stated above...the outcome would not change any of my other decisions. Also, all of my test came back regular, so there was no need for me to even consider it.
Maybe if I were older, I would consider it.

I am going to take the AFP test. The results will not change anything but I would like to know so I can be prepared, you know?

Re: Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
I am not having the amnio, even thought I am 36. I had the first part of the AFP, and the rest in 3 weeks. Really doesn't matter what the results are, they wouldn't change how we feel about our baby!

I opted not to have an amnio, even though I am 36 --
We did all the other screening tests and that was good enough for us ..

Re: Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
My doc said that the chance of Downs was equal to the chance of an amnio causing a miscarriage. She left it up to me and I chose the ultrascreen. I'm 34.
ETA: If the ultrascreen came back with a high risk for downs, then the doc would have reconsidered the amnio.

Re: Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
I elected against it. I did however have the ultrascreen and AFP. I figured if those came back questionable I would have the amino, but thankfully they all came back fine. I would want to know if something is wrong...I would want to be emotionally prepared.

Re: Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
In the beginning my dr. recommended it because of my age (35) I decided against it. The results from the ultrascreen and AFP were good. I figured if those came back questionable I would have thought about having the amnio, but I'm not sure I would have done it anyway because I really don't think we would have done anything. The dr. agreed that it wasn't necessary.

Re: Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
My mom switched doctors because they were so insistant she have one with me (she was 39) and she didn't want to take the chance. I wouldn't do it unless you plan on doing something if something is in fact wrong. I have a co-worker who's been on bedrest for 3 weeks now after having one from losing fluids. Not worth it.

I'm 35 - that's why the doctor told me he had to mention it to me.
I feel much better knowing I'm not the only one to decline it.

Re: Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
We elected not to based on the results of our ultrascreen. I'm 34 now, but will be 35 when I deliver.

Re: Did anyone elect not to have an amnio?
I declined the ultra screen too. I just feel like there are so many false positives associated with these tests, and if I'm not going to do anything with the information, why bother?
I may do a level II but that's about the extent of it.
