Put Lanolin cream on them. It is safe for the baby. You don't have to wash it off before you nurse the baby again. I would recommend using it plentifully. Many brands make it -- I think one brand calls it Lansinoh and that is a good brand. You can get it at target, BRU, BBB --- I have seen it in a lot of places.

Re: Need help w/breastfeeding
I had a really hard time with bfing too. I did call a lactation consultant which helped me quite a bit. Even now, I'm still struggling with it. Michele31 has been very helpful. I agree with the linsinoh. I think the cracking is probably coming from poor latching, so maybe another position will help.
Bfing is hard so don't be too hard on yourself. It takes time and practice.

Re: Need help w/breastfeeding
La Leche would have lots of helpful advice as well.
Hang in there, it gets better and is so worth it. (I'm still BFing at almost 18 months and had lots of pain in the beginning. You aren't alone, and are so smart to be looking for help!)

Ditto everyone else's suggestions and there are several support groups in the area as well. One through South Nassau Hospital and one through Winthrop if you're interested.

You can also try some wet cold tea bags. They help with the pain

Re: Need help w/breastfeeding
I used Lansinoh all day in the beginning and it really helped...also, try to air dry your breasts after you feed and if you are concerned with latching issues, call a lacatation consultant in your neighborhood... Lactation consultant link

Re: Need help w/breastfeeding
Le Leche has monthly support groups and most hospitals have them as well for free. Plainview hospital has one WEEKLY which I think is soooo important because who can wait a month when you are having trouble BFing. Its wednesdays at 10:30. But I also think that nothing beats having an LC come to your home first. Worth the $$ IMO.
Get the help that you need. No reason to suffer. Good Luck...

Re: Need help w/breastfeeding
Pumping is very different from nursing so yes, that is very normal. Also, remember that a higher setting does not = more milk. Be careful that you pump at a time when your baby does not need to nurse or else she will not have any milk in your breasts to drink. the best time is right after the morning feeding. Your body produces more milk at that time. Your body will need time to get used to the pump and to produce more milk for when you pump. If you start to use a bottle make sure that you always pump near that time. You don't want to skip a session and decrease your milk production. Before you pump put a tab of olive oil on your nipples. that will really help them heal while pumping. also, use the cream right after you breastfeed or pump.
Let me know if I can help.

Re: Need help w/breastfeeding
I had much discomfort, soreness, cracked, etc in the beginning and the Lacation nurse told me to use some olive oil on my nipples and it helped heal them. I am so thankful I hung in there as nursing it is SO simple now! Hang in there and we are here to support you
