At what point did you start, or will you start, looking for daycare options? All I really know of in our neighborhood is that the Tutor Time is really well liked. It's expensive though, doable, but expensive. I signed up for the free version of care.com, but I've heard one or two women on here say they didn't have a good experience with it. Where are you beginning your search and when?

I began my search at the end of February and we need care starting right after Labor Day. We finalized everything by mid March.
My school district has a list of certified providers (homes and centers).

If you want a center I would start earlier than later. Most places have waiting lists for an infant spot. I was on 3 waiting lists and received calls when my DS was 9 months or so....that how long it took for a spot to open.
If you want a nanny then you can probably wait a little longer.
For centers I would goggle daycare in your town and go from there. Chances are there are so many more than you actually realize.

Thanks for the advice! I just really don't want to go with just anywhere, I want to make sure it's a well respected place. I like getting reviews on here because LIF hasn't guided me wrong yet - all our contractors we got off here have been great, versus Angieslist which we were NOT happy with.

Tutor time is amazing. They are academically based, and teach socialization, manners and routines as well. I know they're $$$$ but I believe you get what you pay for. This is where I'd send my girls if I were working full time again.

This is how I feel.
Anyone know if their prices are location specific?

I do not have specific recommendations but I have found these sites helpful in my search: This tells you all recent violations a facility has (had): http://it.ocfs.ny.gov/ccfs_facilitysearch/
List of accrediated programs: http://families.naeyc.org/find-quality-child-care
My two cents...even if a place is highly recommended check the violation history-- one facility that a few people recommended in my area has a pretty concerning track record of failure to document staff info including background checks, vaccinations, etc.

I would still go to places. You will get a feeling when you walk into a place. Your instinct will def tell you if it is worth considering. And I have to say what would piss one person off will not another so I would take reviews with a grain of salt. I know people have not liked my DSs daycare for various reasons but those reasons never bothered me.

That's a really valid point! Everyone has different criteria for what they want.

Re: DayCare
LOL. We lived in the city when I was pregnant with DS. We put ourselves on waiting lists beginning when I was 15w pregnant needing care beginning when baby would be 18 weeks old. 2 weeks before I went back to work we were still not off any waitlists so we ended up going the nanny route. I finally got off a waitlist when DS was 9 months old and we were in contract for a house in the burbs. I've heard its somewhat easier out here

Are you in the city? that was exactly our experience. We got a spot when DS was 9 months. We needed the spot when he was 18 weeks old.

Holy crap... One place had ONE SPOT for when I will need and one place (my top choice) is waitlisted.
Those who went the nanny route, what were your experiences and how did you find them?

I started reaching out, I'm going to tell DH that he has NO choice but will have to leave work early a few nights so we can tour the centers.

Nope Long Island. But it's just as bad out here. The popular ones have mile long wait lists and first choice is given to those that have a child in the center.
