Hi everyone! Hospital help?

Hi girls,
I am a regular poster in hiding. Chat Icon
We are newly pregnant and I am so nervous from previous losses but staying positive.
I am trying to decide on an OB and I have found two-
One that delivers in LIJ and one that delivers in Winthrop.
Any pros and cons to each?
Thanks and hoping I stay with you all for a while this time!

I delivered at Winthrop 15 months ago and had a great experience.

Hi everyone! Hospital help?

I would hands down prefer LIJ Katz Women's Hospital over Withrop. In fact, I used to see an OBGYN who delivered at Winthrop and after going to visit my SIL there when she had a baby (and hearing multiple not so great reviews), I was totally turned off from the hospital to the point that I switched my OBGYN to a practice with privileges at LIJ. As a visitor, I found many of the nurses in Winthrop to be rude. I can't speak to the actual labor and delivery nurses, but the nurses who come into the room to check on mom and baby. My SIL bed sheet had a large discoloration on it which grossed me out. I asked a nurse to change the fitted sheet and got major attitude. In addition there was a large dust ball in the corner of the room and some urine on underside of the toilet seat. I again called in the nurse and confirmed with her that we were indeed in a hospital that is supposed to be a sanitary environment. Another downfall of Winthrop is that most of the rooms are double rooms where you can have a roommate. You can pay out of pocket for a single if they are available but insurance won't pick up the difference in room cost. Every room is LIJ Katz is a private single -- no extra charge. In addition, every room in LIJ has its own mini fridge and the loveseat converts to a pull out bed so that the other parent can stay overnight in the room to help with the baby as you recover. My SIL also said that she felt pressured by the nurses to breast feed, despite her being very clear that she only wanted to bottle feed. Finally, they gave her a rough time when she asked them to take the baby to the nursery so that she could rest up and sleep. Apparently they are pushing for the babies to stay in the room with the mother for a majority (18-20 hours) of the day. She was recovering from a c-section and wanted some sleep at night before taking the baby home -- I don't blame her! The first 2 nights she said it was incredibly painful to get in and out of bed to tend to the baby. After persistence, the nurses finally took my nephew to the nursery for the rest of the night. I don't have any children yet, but when I do, I will definitely be at LIJ Katz!!

I can only speak from my experience 15 months ago, but there was no pressure to breast feed at all. They also didn't pressure me to keep the baby in the room. A matter of fact, the first night that nurse said she herself would bring the baby to the nursery that night after everyone left because she knew now tired I was. She didn't eve bother me during the night because she said it was important that I rest.

Oh wow! I'm sorry she had such a bad experience. I know absolutely nothing about Winthrop except that it has a level 3 NICU.

Are you sure they are charging for singles again? They stopped that 2 years ago when they started trying to give everyone singles.

I delivered at Lij and can only say good things
I've never visited Winthrop but a friend delivered there recently - she didn't have any complaints but she did mention she was lucky she didn't get a roommate....so I'm guessing they don't only have single (which is all Lij has)

Eta - I just looked up Winthrop and if you check out this page it says you can have 24 hour room in with your baby if you have a private room or if your roommate agrees....so my vote would defiantly be Lij since they are all private rooms
Winthrop

Not sure about this but it is what my SIL told me. Perhaps she is incorrect or misinterpreted something? She was alone in her room with the empty bed next to her. Visitors placed their coats/bags on the empty bed and the nurses constantly came in requesting the coats/beds in the room be removed from the empty bed in order to keep it sanitary for necessary use. Another reason I didn't like them.......

Can you request a hospital tour at each? Then you can see what feels better to you? Honestly, they're both very good hospitals with great NICUs. I've never been a patient at LIJ, I delivered three times at Winthrop (and had a non-OB related emergency surgery there as well). My last delivery was 12 weeks ago. I had a fabulous anesthesia team & nurses in L&D & I love my OB. Maternity floor was fine--no complaints.

Bad things can happen anywhere. I don't think you can go wrong with either hospital. Best of luck to you!

Hi everyone! Hospital help?

I delivered at Winthrop 3 times (Jan. 2010, Dec. 2011, and 2 weeks ago) and had a wonderful experience all 3 times. I don't have any experience with LIJ so I can't compare, but I have nothing but good things to say about Winthrop.

Re: Hi everyone! Hospital help?

I delivered my son almost 5 years ago at LIJ.....back then, it felt like a factory and as a first time mom, that is not what I was looking for. My experience was so terrible that I switched to a doctor affiliated with Winthrop. Almost 3 years ago, I delivered at Winthrop. They tried their best to have me room alone (I was alone 2 out of 4 nights) and I had a wonderful experience with all of the staff there. I will be delivering there again at the end of the summer and am hearing mixed reviews regarding the breastfeeding, rooming in push and refusal of the use of pacifiers. I love my doctor and that is what will keep me at Winthrop but my personal feeling is that the room alone is worth it at LIJ! Since this is my third pregnancy and I will have two little siblings visiting, having my own room would be wonderful but in the end, it's the doctor I prefer over anything else! I would suggest getting recommendations for doctors at both hospitals and meeting with them to decide!

Re: Hi everyone! Hospital help?

I just delivered at Winthrop 2 weeks ago, had a private room I didn't have to pay for, and didn't get any pressure to room in or breast feed like I saw on here.

Hi everyone! Hospital help?

I delivered at Winthrop and at NSLIJ Manhasset. Winthrop's L&D/recovery was amazing. Post partum unit was fine, even though I had a bad roommate. They "lost" my baby at one point between the NICU and well baby nursery. Each nursery told me the other had her. For those reasons, I wouldn't deliver there again.

NSLIJ's L&D was great, however I was moved to a shared recovery area before going up to my room. I was NOT happy about that! The private rooms are beautiful, and my first day there was great. Beyond that I felt very neglected and forgotten about by the nurses. I even changed my own sheets! They were good about me taking the baby to the nursery when I needed some rest (you have to wheel them there yourself) and they don't give pacifiers, which I actually didn't mind.

All in all, I would go back to NSLIJ before Winthrop.

LIJ is very close to my job and I love the private rooming. I am BFing so that does not bother me. I am leaning more towards them. Thanks girls!

Hi everyone! Hospital help?

Katz and north shore are diff, my doc delivers at the very new Katz. A very good nurse friend works at the Schneider children's hospital of NS/LIJ, and says all the women there deliver at Katz.

Hi everyone! Hospital help?

I recommend All About Women, doctors are Cafaro Rosenberg and McNally. They deliver at North Shore MAnhasset. I am high risk, have been hospitalized four times this pregnancy. They are amazing.

Re: Hi everyone! Hospital help?

I would do a tour of each as a PP suggested. We did that. I ended up delivering at Winthrop because I didn't want to switch OBs, but the rooms are much nicer at LIJ. You probably won't get to see the postpartum rooms at Winthrop unless they changed the tour.

Winthrop will not give you pacifiers for the baby but you can bring your own. For those asking, I took a tour of Winthrop through my doctors office and it was great. They took you everywhere! Showed you check in, where you'll be before labor and delivery, labor and delivery rooms and maternity. I left with no questions unanswered.

My experience at Winthrop was pretty good but a lot of it was due to getting lucky. Had I not had my own room the whole time my experience would have been very different.

Crashing, I feel exactly the same. Had I not had a private room I think I would have felt differently. I also did not have BF pushed on me. But this was 21 months ago.... so reading all of these bad stories recently has made me nervous for the next time around!

I have had 2 dc at Winthrop and will have #3 there later this summer. I had a great experience each time. I would decide based on the Dr. you like better rather than the hospital. Having a Dr. you trust and feel is capable of providing you with the best possible care is way more important. Good Luck!
