Strasburg PA RR sites

Planning a trip to Lancaster. DS just turned 4.

I am trying to figure out if the Strasburg RR is worth it. It says it's a 45 minute train ride, and I think there is a kid's play area but I heard mixed reviews on it. Is there something interesting about the train ride? I mean, would he get the same kicks out of riding the LIRR?Chat Icon

He likes trains but doesn't go bananas for them or anything. He is more of a climbing on things type of kid and would probably enjoy the play area more.

If the RR is worth it, should we get the combo ticket and also do the museum?

TIA!

The train will take you Cherry Crest Farms (if they are open when you are going). But the actual ride itself is somewhat boring to be honest. We did the open air car, and I remember it was really hot when we went.

We did Strasburg RR when DS was 2.5. The Thomas the Train exhibit was going on, though, so we rode on Thomas. The train ride was fine, he liked it well enough (and probably would have liked it just as well if it wasn't Thomas).

But I don't know that it's something that I'd make a point to do. We went to Lancaster to visit a friend of mine, and while there, we took DS to Dutch Wonderland (which he loved) and Strasburg RR.

So I think if you have time to fill in your trip, it's an age appropriate activity that your DS would likely enjoy. I mean, the ride is definitely more scenic than the LIRR, lol! But it's nothing so great that I'd go out of my way to do it, or squeeze it in, if you have a full trip planned already.

ETA - There was a kids' play area, if I can remember, but nothing spectacular. If he has a train table at home (or has played with them before), it probably won't thrill him.

Re: Strasburg PA RR sites

Thank you ladies!

So it sounds like a half day activity at the most.

It's good to know it goes to Cherry Crest Farms; that is on our list of potential stops too.

We'll be hitting all the usual stops (DW and Hershey combo ticket plus one or two smaller sites.) I can't wait. I refer to this area as one of my happy places.Chat Icon

I think if you go during Thomas and just watch thomas pull up and take a pic in front of it - you would get the same effect! But I def know my DS enjoyed it! Def worth doing once!

We loved Cherry Crest and Dutch wonderland and also choochoo barn and the RR museum!
