Passports for 3 & 5 year old for Bahamas Cruise?
Are they necessary? Or is the birth certificate ok?
I would have gotten them just b/c they are easier to whip out and deal w/ .........but now it's crunch time and I'd have to expedite and it seems like a waste of $$ if I don't NEED them -

My understanding is if you embark and disembark on US soil, you should be fine with just birth certificate. The only problem would be is if God forbid something happens, you can't fly out of Bahamas without passport.

we did not get them for our kids when we went in 2013. If its closed loop you are fine with just birth certificates.

Get them. You don't have to but it is worth it. You are ok if nothing happens. But heaven forbid your child gets very sick, you or your DH have an accident, someone at home passes away or gets sick and you must depart the cruise early. You miss the ship for an unforeseen issue. You will not be able to fly out as the BC are only good for the cruise and you will need a passport to get back to the US or the next island to meet up with the ship. It could be a big hassle. I would get it peace of mind if nothing else. While probably nothing will happen you never know if on a tour the bus has an accident, someone falls and breaks something, appendix or whatever. Yes the ships have doctors but they are really for minor issues and accidents or traveling with kids you just never know.

I'd still try and get them. Even if they don't come in time for the trip it's still good to have. We take the passports over the birth certificate when traveling in the US. Just feel better to have some form of ID. It only is good for 5 years.
Speaking of which... I have to get a new one for DS1 already since it expires soon and he'll be 5 next month. Got it when he was 6 months.

I wouldn't waste the money on an expedited passport, and didn't when we cruised last year. We used our BC's without issue. The chances of something happening are very slim. But, we didn't do offsite excursions, and had zero chance of missing the ship.

I have cruised 3x with no passport. If you had time to get them regularly then I'd say can't hurt to have them. But I personally wouldn't spend the extra to expedite since it's not necessary.
On the off chance something happens to the ship, arrangements are generally made for those without passports by the cruise line from what I understand. Just don't miss the ship in port & You're fine with a BC.

You do not get stuck like that if there's an actual emergency. That's not how it works. The cruise line makes arrangements with customs. I absolutely wouldn't bother.

While they might help you and it would work out. It takes a while to get issued the proper documents. It is not a quick thing. Ok maybe if you miss not ok if you have a medical emergency or other emergency which requires you to leave in a hurry.

We are going on a cruise to the Bahamas in July & I got the kids passports for this exact reason.
Every right you have is non existant once you step off of American soil. I wasn't taking any chances.
