Joint birthday party?
DD has a good friend in her class who has a birthday one week before hers. We've become friends with his parents too. We were talking about doing a joint birthday party at My Gym for them both. Most of the kids will know both of them, but we have some friends from outside of school that we'd like to invite too. How would you feel if you were invited to a birthday party for two kids and only knew one of them? Is there any way to phrase on the invite that you shouldn't buy a gift for the kid you don't know?

IMO I'd think it was a little weird unless the kids were related. But that shouldn't stop you from doing it, if that's what you really want. I guess you'd have to work out the finances if you don't both invite an even number of non-shared people.

Re: Joint birthday party?
I would get separate invitations that don't mention the other kid for outside family and friends.

Re: Joint birthday party?
I don't know - in all honesty, I may feel a little po'd as a mom seeing that my invited kid's participation cost was split by two families and I had to get gifts for both, and then when it's my kid's birthday, I have to pay for two kids, and not split that cost with anyone. Just my opinion. I actually see it weirder for those who would be the shared invites than the outliers ones, for this reason.

Re: Joint birthday party?
If you plan on doing this I would have both names listed for the class kids and for whoever else you invite I would simply not list the other child's name - I also would pay for the additional guests I'm inviting. It wouldn't be fair to split that. I could see people splitting the cost of a gift between two kids so if they normally would spend $30 on one birthday child they would probably spend $15 each because it's a joint birthday.

I have friends who did this, their children were a week apart. Both children were included on invite and everyone got it. You buy a gift for the kid you are going for or both if you are there for both of them. We all thought it was a great idea, the girls loved it and it wasn't weird at all.
