Ella as a nickname
To honor our grandmother's on both our father's sides we decided on the name Elizabeth Maria. I don't love the nicknames for Elizabeth for the most part but my daughter's love the name Ella. I hate Ella Maria, my husband refuses to do Ella Marie (which I like) since his grandmother was Maria, my grandmother was Elizabeth but I'm more flexible about this stuff than DH is. So my question is, is it okay to put on the birth certificate Elizabeth Maria and call the child Ella? What do you put on the birth announcement if you are primarily calling the child by a nickname.

Ella as a nickname
My son's name is Charles and we NEVER call him Charlie. We call him Charlie. We use Charlie on everything. I got a necklace made with his name and birthday and I used Charlie and not Charles.

Ella as a nickname
I think it's fine to do that. My nephew's name is Lucas and we hardly ever call him that. We call him Luke. And for the birth announcement, I'd put her whole name on it- (Elizabeth Maria). Almost every child has a nickname and I don't think it's important to put it on the announcement.

Ella as a nickname
I think you really can use whatever nickname you want. DH's cousin is Elizabeth, named after her mother, and everyone, including her parents, grandparents, cousins, friends, etc. call her Eliza. In fact, DH and I have been together for 9 years and I didn't know until last year that she was Elizabeth lol. Another family name on DH's side is Katherine. But his grandma is called Kay, her daughter (Katherine) is called Kerrie, and her daughter (Katherine) is called Kara. I even address envelopes with those names on them instead of Katherine. I mean if her name was Elizabeth and you decided to call her Jackie that might be strange lol but anything close to Elizabeth is good and you're the mom so you get the say!

Ella as a nickname
To be honest I don't love the idea. I think it would cause confusion. In my opinion Elizabeth and Ella are two different names. Its not the same as naming your kid Charles and calling him Charlie all the time, or Jennifer and calling her Jen. If Elizabeth is on her birth certificate that's what her name will be when she goes to school and on any official documents. I feel like she would have to go around correcting people saying "its Ella" which would annoy me if I had to do that all the time or if my kid had to. For Elizabeth I would do Liz, Eliza, Liza or Beth only. Just to throw it out there, what about just naming her Ella Elizabeth. I think it sounds kind of cute with the repetitive E.

Re: Ella as a nickname
i think its a great nickname for Elizabeth - but just bc you want to call her Ella, doesnt meant she will want to be called Ella growing up. She can end up having her friends call her Liz, Liza etc. As for the announcement, i would put her actual name on it not her nickname. People may want to give bonds etc and should have her proper info

Re: Ella as a nickname
Thank you all. We will go forward with the name then. If I did Ella Elizabeth I'd be looking at a divorce. My husband really wanted the first name to be Maria but I absolutely refused. It was either going to be Ella Maria or Elizabeth Maria.
