DH and I are considering selling our current home to live upstairs (an apartment with separate entrance, bath, kitchen, living area...) from my parents home which they would like to sell us in the future. Kids would be in same school district so no issue there. Pros to this would be having the money from selling current home and saving money going forward since we will be splitting costs (taxes etc) by moving in parents home. Our plan would be to but their home or another home near by. We wanted more property/space and more seclusion which our current home doesn't have. The kids will have their own room which is on main floor not part of the apartment. There are stairs that lead to the main area from the bedroom in our apartment. So while there is a separate entrance to apartment there is also a door within apartment leading downstairs to the rest of house.

The living in the apartment would be temporary until we buy the home or another in that particular neighborhood.of course the con would be I can't touch/remodel the house now which definitely needs some updating. DH is looking at this as a chance to save more money to get the house more suitable for our needs now. I feel like we are doing things backwards lol usually people will rent small to save money to then find their dream home. My parents home is huge with a lot of property but needs updating.

Anyone have experience living with parents and does this sound like a good plan for now? I couldn't do it if there was no separate upstairs living for sure.
