Can you mix formula with breast milk?

Just thinking ahead in case my supply dwindles when I return to work.

Yes, but keep in mind that formula needs to be tossed an hour after spit hits it while BM doesn't, so if you have them both in the same bottle you have to toss precious BM. I always had them in separate bottles for that reason.

My ds will only drink formula if it is mixed with breastmilk. So start trying formula before your supply is really low.

Can you mix formula with breast milk?

How does this work? Do you make half a formula bottle and then add BM or do you actually mix the formula w/ the BM instead of water?

Make formula (if ur using powder) then combine w BM. Or just combine RTF with BM. Use whatever ratio you want depending on how much BM or formula you have.

I used to mix.....And while I know that is what the bottle says about formula...I bet if you ask most moms who FF, they will say they didnt follow that 1 hour rule. My first son was almost completely FF and my second was on BF for 3 months then FF after, and I used to use a 2 hour rule and it was always fine.

I remember reading that you shouldn't mix bm and formula. Make two bottles - first with whatever bm you have, second with formula if needed. You don't want to toss the liquid gold in case baby doesn't finish the bottle.

Edited to clarify: I was always told that once a bottle is started it must be used within an hour, regardless of whether it's bm or formula. That is related to bacteria from saliva, not the drink itself (I believe). With regard to mixing, since it's so hard to get the bm in the first place, I was told to give bm to the baby first, in whatever amount you think they will actually drink. If they are still hungry then give them more (bm or if you don't have any left, formula).

Good luck!

The nurses in the NICU always told us that BM had to be tossed an hour after it was touched as well. Not true?

Id assume the NICU nurses were erring on the side of caution. I've kept a half drunk bottle of BM in the fridge for over 48 hours and my kids were fine!

I put BM back in fridge is my daughter does not finish there were times it was left out and I used in her cereal ... it was fine. Never dumped that precious stuff down the drain..I worked to hard to get it in first place..lOL
