5. DS#1 just turned 5 last week and I am very recently feeling comfortable if he is out of my sight.

I follow my just turned 3yo around the playground. He doesn't know his boundaries yet. DH is an ortho doctor and I have heard about too many accidents at playgrounds.

Never. I am very paranoid.

Very long story short, at a local playground dd went inside a small play hut. I saw her and a little boy. A minute or 2 later when I looked again a man was also hidden inside the tunnel just sitting there. Probably a dad but he could easily have "accidentally" touched dd if he wanted to.

I blame it on her being an only child.

She's 5 and I freak if she stays too long behind a tree and I can't see her or if she dawdles sliding down the slide.

I may not hover over her but I never take my eyes off of her. Plus I take my husband and we tag team her from two sides. If Im alone with her the distance between us is MUCH less.

I really don't see that backing off any time soon.

I let DD run around and play freely but she's always in sight. She's almost 5.

DD is 5 and DS is 2.5. Once DS became mobile it became very difficult to keep an eye on both. DD is good at following my rules so I set boundaries for her and constantly look for her while following my DS. I don't let him stray too far from where she is.

Just last year I started letting her do her own thing at chuck e cheese. She knows she has to check in with me every few minutes and I constantly look around for her.

I hate letting her go on her own a little bit but its my DC's go in 2 different directions!

I agree. I don't think I'd ever be comfortable with that, no matter what age.

Re: At what age would you let your DC run around where you can't see them at a playground?

We were at the park a couple days ago and there were puffs on the ground. A little girl about 3 started eating them I told her not to that they were dirty, my son wandered away so of course I went with him. The little girl continued to eat all the puffs off the floor. I mean I couldn't make her stop I asked where her mom was, she ignored me, I told her to stop a couple times.

A while later I saw two moms deep in convo meander over to her...I was totally in shock, she was eating puffs and on her own for over 10 minutes and I cannot believe mom would have SEEN her eating puffs off the floor and not gone over to stop her so mom was ignoring her toddler for 10 minutes.

I was keeping my eye on the little girl and would not have left until I saw her parent come over, I mean what if god forbid she was alone somehow, thats what I honestly thought bc I was so surprised.

I'm a total helicopter parent and still follow my kids around, they are 4 and 5.5 My friends let their LOs run free and it makes me nuts! Maybe when they are 9/10? Even if they can maneuver themselves on the playground I am always on the lookout for bullies and older, crazier kids.

I would say around 4, I never let them out of my sight but I didn't exactly follow right behind them around the playground either. Probably around 5-6ish, I started feeling comfortable sitting on a bench, nearby, still keeping an eye on them from a distance.

Also depends on the playground size. HUGE playgrounds, much easier to do on fenced in and smaller playgrounds.
