Baby/toddler's feet won't fit in shoes
DS is 13 mo and I took him to Stride Rite for his first pair of shoes. He's not walking yet but is almost there, so I want something to put on his feet when we're out.
The salesman at Stride Rite said his feet are too chubby to fit in shoes right now! With some struggling I got his foot into a shoe but it barely closed. His advice was to keep him in socks for now and come back later when his feet hopefully slim down.
I've never heard of this before! DS is a little chubby but it's not like he's huge. He's 23lbs, which is average.
Has anyone dealt with this? Is there some other shoe brand that will fit a chubby foot? I feel like I can't put him down when we're out because all he has is socks on his feet.

No advice about regular shoes.
But I used a sock/shoe for DS. I think I got them at BRU. It was a sock with a thick rubber bottom. We used them when we were out so I could put him down before he wore shoes.
Also at Target there were some moccassin type shoes in the baby section. They also have a "leather" bottom. Again just so there was something between him and the ground.

Try robeez or pedipedz. Since he is not yet walking he really should not be in hard shoes yet. It is much easier and better for little feet to be in soft leather bottom shoes at this point. link I don't love the pattern, but this is the type of shoe to look for. Once he can take a few steps and has begun walking, I liked Jack and Lily

That's surprising. Did they try the extra wide shoes? Those sometimes give a little more room in the instep. My daughter had uber chubby feet when she got her first shoes and the wide and extra wide stride rites fit fine.
You can also use the robeez or robeez type shoes for now. They look like a real shoe, but have elastic around the ankle and more give in the instep than a real shoe.

I got DD's first pair of shoes from Payless. I didn't see the need for stride rite's when she wasn't actually walking yet but like you, I wanted something she could stand in if we were out. They have wide widths and some of the brands seem to run pretty wide. I would also look into pedi peds or robeez which are soft soled. Also skidders are like socks but have a thick rubber sole.

My DS1 had super chubby feet. At 6 months and 21lbs, DS2 seems to be the same. Try Robeez. They have elastic and will stretch on top. They are like a slipper. They aren't good for walking but should be good for now while you are out. The other brand we had when DS was little was Pediped. Actually, for sneakers also try Tsukioshi sneakers (have them on Zappos). DS1's foot thinned out a bit and over time he went from a Wide to a regular width shoe. The only other brand I tried at that age was Stride Rite.

I suppose that's possible, although I'd go to a different Stride Rite for another measurement.
My DD is 13 mos and weighs 28 lbs, so your DS is a lot smaller than my DD. She wears a size 4.5W.

E is W, EE and extra wide 
If you know the size, go online (zappos) etc and buy a pair! If he is just wide, there should be no issues!

It might not be a width issue--he might have a high instep, which the widest shoes won't help.
Try to find shoes with an unstructured top, such as the Nike Flex or Nike Dart. They sell them at Kohl's.
Shoes with a hard top (at the base of the laces) will squash and hurt their little feet!

IMO you should be getting the soft shoes. The should be barefoot as much as possible or socks when they are learning and even when we were out he wasn't walking in public until I knew he really could.
I would just get soft shoes and they have a lot of give in them so you should be able to find ones that fit.

Yup...ds has chunky feet but is super skinny. DC's fit wide and also come extra wide. You can get them at journey's kids in the mall.

Thanks everyone. I will look for either the soft top ones or just stick with socks for now. I think the issue is with the tops of his feet being chubby so hard top shoes might not be working now. I hope he grows out of this problem before he starts really needing shoes!

I totally agree with above, some cute soft sneakers in Stride Rite's "first steps" area should fit.
DS was over 25 pounds at 6 months & he was fully independently walking (with shoes) at 11 months. I never had an issue buying him shoes, but he's only started wearing formal shoes at 3.

I love Stride Rite sneakers, but don't necessarily think that the salespeople are well-trained. Go to a private shoe store where the owners have been sizing children's feet for years and know what they need. I don't know where you're located, but Wantagh Bootery on Wantagh Ave has been around forever, and the men who work there are extremely knowledgeable. I prefer them to Stride Rite (they carry Stride Rite in their store), but the only problem is that they never seem to have my DD's size in stock when we need it, so we end up going to them for sizing and buying elsewhere. I'd much rather give them the business when I can though.

Yes, I was trying the first steps for babies who are just learning to walk. We only tried on one shoe and the salesman said his feet are too chubby. I tend to think maybe if I tried on all the styles they had to offer that maybe *something* would have fit.
I know he doesn't really NEED them now, I just wanted something cute to put on his feet so he could stand when we're out places. I don't want to wear them at home or even that often at all.

We loved Robeez and Pedipeds. DD2 had major chubby feet and Pedipeds and Robeez both fit her great.

When we had DD measured for her first pair of shoes (was an independent stride rite store in RVC) the guy said you go up a full size, so your DS should have been a 5, not a 4.5.
I've had the widest foot myself since birth (EEE) and grew up wearing SR. They make them wide. I'd go to a different store as others mentioned.
