Need discipline references for 16mo olds.
Twin DD's are bright 16 month-old. They're starting not to listen, to thrash and scream to get attention. I am trying the best I can to do what I know to stop this from getting out of control. So far, time out has really worked well in certain situations. However, I see us heading down a bad road if we don't get the defiance under control. The screaming is also deafening.
Are there any really good websites or video clips with techniques to prevent needing the Super Nanny in the future? I don't want to have "those kids".

Totally normal at this age to be testing limits and experiencing/expressing a lot of frustration as they explore the world and themselves. they need guidance becoming emotionally competent but they don't yet have the brain development (pre-frontal cortex) to "control" their behavior. Look into Gordon Neufeld, Todd Sarner, Janet Lansbury, Positive Parenting: Toddlers and Beyond, Conscious Discipline all on FB and web sites with lots of valuable articles and video clips. Hope that helps!

I really like the book No More Meltdowns. It's cheap and I find that parents can follow it pretty easily.
I am planning to go to a seminar on positive discipline by Dr. Andrew Vaughan at some point. I have heard good things but only second hand.

That age it is normal. For me at 16m my DS was too young for time outs. he didn't understand them.
I found that most of the meltdowns were because we couldn't' communicate. He had limited words but could completely understand me and he would get frustrated and act out.

Too young to discipline. They get it more towards 2 years old. At this point, it's like trying to discipline a newborn... They just won't get it.
You can teach "shhhh" and "gentle"

Consistency is the key. YOu have to do the same thing everytime or it really won't work well.

Re: Need discipline references for 16mo olds.
Google "Discipline is not a Dirty Word" by Jennifer Birckmayer
or
"1-2-3 Magic!"
ed: I agree that 16 mos is early to discipline with Time Outs. Redirection is more the way to go. DS went through a phase of biting and hitting me (the biting was actually affectionate and was only towards me when he got excited) but the hitting was (and still is) when he gets mad. I have consistently instilled "Nice hands" and "Nice kisses!" and now he repeats the motion for Nice hands and I give him tons of praise and affection. Toddlers that age need to be taught over and over again what behavior is expected, and then rewarded with over-the-top praise, hugs, snuggles, tickles etc so they really "get it."
