Did your child enjoy playing an instrument from the beginning?

We started 4yo (almost 5) DS on piano a few months ago. He doesn't hate it but is not loving it. He refuses to practice.

My parents forced me to play piano since age 3 and I hated it my entire life. I played through college. Although I did not enjoy it, it just became part of my life.

Would you continue with the lessons?

There are other activities DS is in that he truly loves (science class and tae kwon do). The kid loves ninjas and practicing his tae kwon do moves.

no advice, but it you hated it all through life he will prob feel the same... move him into something he likes and wants to do... he will be much happier for it

AJ is 5. I have no intentions of pushing her onto an instrument. However, I am learning guitar and without meaning to, she is learning with me. She will take my guitar and try to make a chord. I finally tuned up the ukulele for her (smaller of course) if she wants to learn more, she can, if not, then fine too. My family is very musical and so its very natural that I want her to love music in many forms. I just figure she doesn't have to perform to appreciate.

She has no desire to 'learn' piano but likes to play with a piano. but she seems to want to 'learn' how to make the sounds on the guitar. She even sings the notes back as I tune it up or check its tuning. Its our thing.

I told my instructor and he said that at this age, if she continues to practice mimicking the sounds and hearing the differences she can be better prepared for any instrument if she ever wants to learn one.

If he doesnt seem to hate it maybe give it some more time. Kids are fickle and can love, hate & then back to loving something in a matter of seconds. After some time if it appears he hates it then I would try a different instrument. Maybe in a year or two he will want to go back to it.

My son is 5 and I put him in everything, mostly sports. I know there are things he may not want to pursue further but I want him to at least try it. I also don't want him to be in the habit of quitting things either. My SS was in Tae Kwon Do when he was little and he was really good. Although he liked it he wanted to quit to play video games more. My DH and I always regret letting him give it up.

I was forced to play piano from 6-12 and perform in guilds. At 12 my teacher moved away and I cried and begged for them to not find me a new one. So I say don't make him do it. It's not like a sport that is a team sport and fun and active. To me unless you have the passion it is so boring and doesn't let you relieve energy as a child.
