Where do you live?

DH are starting to think about buying a house. We both grew up in bayside and currently live in a coop in Whitestone. We both love it here but the houses are too expensive for what you get. So we are thinking of moving to Long Island. We love east northport, but its far and DH works in manhattan so I'm a little hesitant.

We have 2 kids so we are looking for a family oriented town. Any suggestions??

Why dont you look at Great Neck, or Little Neck, Rockville Centre etc.

If you're thinking of East Northport, Ronkonkoma/Sayville/Holbrook/Bohemia are close to the LIRR station.

I'm no help we recently sold our coop in Whitestone and bought a house in Whitestone born and raised and wont leave!

I grew up in Northport and loved it. IMO a great place for families. Lots to do and great schools.

As for a commute. I would take the train from Huntington. Express trains and a short drive (once you know the back roads) to the station.

merrick, bellmore, wantagh, and seaford all good towns and have railroad easily accessable

We live in Centerport and DH commutes to Manhattan from Huntington. We are about 10 minutes from the station so it's really not that bad. I also like it b/c we are between Huntington and Northport so we can take advantage of all that both villages have to offer easily.

obviously we're partial to massapequa :) you should move here!

I grew up in kings park, which is close to east north port and all of the nearby towns over there are family friendly - Commack, smithtown (that's where Katie lives!), north port. the hardest part is the accessibility to the trains, where you either have to drive to Huntington or deer park or take the local train station and transfer. it could amount to a long commute.

Born and raised in Bayside, got married and moved to Astoria (DH is from here). I would love to go back to Whitestone but the prices are insane!!! If I'm paying the kind of $$ I want a huge backyard and house!! Lol
We both don't want to go too far out, we're considering Douglaston, Little Neck (surprisingly the homes here that we've looked at are cheaper than Whitestone!), Manhasset and Roslyn.
Good luck! There's such limited inventory. I hope things change as the weather gents nicer.

Edit to add that I also like Plainview and Syosset, but DH's business is in Brooklyn so we really can't venture out too far.

We live in Huntington (Elwood sd) and love it. We love our house, property, how close we are to Huntington village and everything on Jericho tnpk and 110. Dh commutes to the city from Huntington and I used to before having dd. not bad at all.

In my opinion, if your husband commutes I would look in Nassau or western suffolk.

Any town along the Babylon line (Rockville centre Merrick, Bellmore, Wantaugh, Seaford, Massapequa) or Long Beach Line (Valley Stream, Lynbrook, East Rockaway Oceanside, Island Park , Long Beach) are pretty easy commutes and nice neighborhoods. In my opinion, fI would avoid comutting from Ronkonkoma at all costs. We did it for a few months, my husband is from suffolk, and it was TOO TOO long. Literally between the drive to the station, train ride, and subway we were looking at over 2 hours door to door each way!!! Very bad memories!!!!!!

We're in Oceanside and I really like it and the surrounding areas in terms of family-oriented, lots to do, and decent commute. I would recommend Oceanside, East Rockaway, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre as good areas in terms of what you are looking for.

Long Beach is great for kids. The rec dep't has a TON of stuff for them to do- teams, activities, etc. And obv. the beach is great. Tons of young friendly families. The commute is at least a straight shot into Bkl or Penn depending on where your DH is going. About 55 mins.

Carle Place - Born and raised here and when we got married, DH bought a house here. We are close to every possible store/highway that you could need and you can get to Penn Station in 30-40 minutes via the LIRR.

We looked at houses in Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa.. we ended up buying in one of these towns. DH works in the city so he wanted to be close to the LIRR and these towns are on the babylon line so there are express trains during rush hour if that is important. Good luck in your search!

Lived in whitestone queens for 30 years. Could never afford a house there. My dh and i moved to albertson,li we loved it there awesome schools.

What about floral park?

I live close to northport and while nice I would never choose to live there knowing I had to commute. I probably wouldn't go past huntington since the station is an end of the line.

Also where does he work in manhattan? If it's one penn plaza that's one thing. But to drive 15 minutes from northport to huntigton station. Then take an hour plus train. Then a subway? It's a lot of commuting.
