Dilation questions-
Like you said, everyone is different. I know women who began dilating as early as 30w (or earlier) and ended up on bedrest. I know women who at 40w were still not dilated.
I was in L&D on Monday and had an internal (my first). I was 50% effaced but closed (no dilation) but was apparently having contractions that I couldn't even tell I was having.

Dilation questions-
Theres really no way to know, my sister walked around for 3w at 2cm. My cousins wife was checked at 37w she was closed and the next day she went into labor.
ou may have contractions before you start to dilate, you may have contractions and never dilate.

Dilation questions-
There is no way to tell how quickly a women will progress once she begins to dilate. It could take several hours or several weeks. I am 38 weeks today and I am 60% effaced and about 1 cm dilated. My OB ended my appointment this morning by saying I could go any day but based on my medical history (pre pregnancy) she would not allow me to go past 41 weeks so basically between today and March 19th I am certain to deliver. Most of the time the hospital will send you home if you are not 5 cm dilated. As for when to go to the hospital I was told unless I have bleeding or my water breaks and it is NOT clear and odorless I should wait until I have contractions that are five minutes apart that last for one minute for an hour.

Dilation questions-
I walked around for a month 2 cm dialated. Even the day before my due date. The doctors swore I would go early. Well I woke up the morning of my due date with contractions. Got to the hospital at 12:30 and I was 9.5 cm.

Re: Dilation questions-
With dd, at 40 weeks, 5 days I was not dialated at all. The dr was convinced it would be awhile. 36 hrs later my water broke and 3cm when I got to the hospital.
