"Why do we eat animals?"

How would you answer this question if your 5 year old asked you? I was cutting a honey spiral ham tonight and my son asked me if it was an animal. When I said yes, that it came from a pig, he asked me why we eat animals. I was taken off guard. My son eats very little meat. Never even tried it really until he was about 4. Just curious how you would have answered.

A little lesson on the food chain. I would do it in a way that doesn't make it seem cruel, but necessary for survival...like a fact of life, and not emotional.

Re: "Why do we eat animals?"

I would have said something along the lines of "because some people like the taste of animal meat...people have been eating meat for centuries" etc etc. I am a vegetarian but my DH is not and I do give meat to the kids on occasion - they are not big fans. DH will sometimes offer them a taste of what he is eating and they both say "yeuch". My DD is 8 and she has asked where ham etc comes from and will state "so the farmer kills the pig and then we buy the meat right" and I will tell her yes. She has asked me why I dont eat meat and I have told her and she just nods her head. I believe in answering their questions simply and that usually suffices around here.

I guess, as a kid, my mom told me it was a matter of culture and tradition. Essentially, that somewhere along the lines, people had decided to use as animals as food for taste/ survival. Sadly, times have changed. There is no way to justify modern factory farming Chat Icon

Re: "Why do we eat animals?"

Our DC have always been told that we eat animals, not just "hot dogs" or "steak". We keep it scientific, and the fact that we are omnivores, so we eat animals and plants. We explain how other animals eat, and some animals, like cats, are carnivores, and only eat meat, some animals, like cows, are herbivores, and only eat plants, and other animals, like dogs, are omnivores, and eat anything.
We've also watched a lot of shows on the history or mankind, and how cooking food helps digestion, and how and what early man ate. We watch cooking shows on how food is prepared.
For us, keeping it very scientific and factual, without getting too gory, has worked very well, and both DC (now 10 and 7) are very comfortable with what they are actually eating.
