self cleaning oven ?

Do you do anything to prep your oven before it self cleans? Do you take racks out and clean first then put back? Just leave them in? Take them out and keep out?

I believe we took them out. I would suggest doing this in the spring or summer so you can air out. We had to turn ours off after a little while because it STUNK and hurt our eyes!

I leave the racks in and just turn the oven on clean. Leaving the racks in can discolor them but it is easier then cleaning them.

Re: self cleaning oven ?

The manual with my oven said to leave the racks out bc of discoloring and the racks are dishwasher safe.

No need to pretreat anything. Just put it on and when it's done, you just wipe out all the ash. It's pretty cool

I leave the racks in, no discoloration here.

I also have a few restaurant grade baking sheets that I'll throw in (MIL told me to do this). The very high heat burns off all of the stuck on gunk in the corners. Just don't do it with some newer pans and definite not with non-stick.

self cleaning oven ?

Make sure that there is no dirt or grease on the outside of the door. I did mine and apparently there must have been something on the top of the door that I did not see. It is now stained. The manual did say something about making sure the outside was clean but I guess I missed something.

Also my oven has racks that attach to the door to open automatically and the manual says leaving the racks in can destroy the coating that is on the mechanism so to be sure to remove that.
