What's everyone's opinions on crown molding, window and door/passageway trim? I typically love molding and trim but our house is fairly modern and the rooms aren't huge so I'm having trouble envisioning it.....But I can't help feeling like the house is "unfinished."

Also our bedroom is a little wonky.. its square/rectangular but one wall has about a 12 inch slant at the top before it reaches the ceiling... in order words, it's not a right angle. Can it even be done in a room like that?

Decisions, decisions....

You can never go wrong with crown, IMO. I love it. It gives such a finished look. We crowned our entire house, including the bathrooms. In our foyer and living room we did double crown, since it's higher ceilings.

You can also cap off the crown if your walls are weird. Ill show you a pic of our archway

(pardon the tape and uneven lines, we are painting at the moment.)

I have a very small house and so far we have put crown molding everywhere but the bedrooms and hallway. I can't wait to finish, I feel like the other rooms look unfinished.

If your house is truly a modern style of house, then no, I would not do crown moulding. I'm very much into design and I feel like one should play to the house's strength. I don't like co when people try to make a modern house into a colonial and vice versa. It just won't look right.

Totally agree. You need to go with the feel of the house. If it is truly modern then no crown moldings. I much prefer modern décor but we just bought a colonial with a rustic feel. It would look silly with a modern décor so I'm switching over to a more rustic modern : ).

I love, LOVE crown but you have to follow the feel of your home.

We did crown and trim in all of our rooms - I didn't feel like they were finished until we did. Our rooms aren't huge either, and I swear, the crown makes them look bigger. I also love the way my paint colors POP with the off white trim...

In traditional style houses, crown looks great.

we did a large crown in our living room and dining room which ties into the crown on our kitchen cabinets. we get a lot of complements on it.

we didn't do it in the bedrooms, primarily since the master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling.

I would also suggest that there are molding places on LI outside of home depot. You can get nicer more detailed molding for not a lot more money. especially in MDF. we have a 6 inch crown with a decent amount of detail that was around $2 per foot

Thanks everyone. Our house is very modern that's why it's such a hard decision. I love crown, but I'm worried it may clash with the style. I'm going to check out some shops and see if I can find a less traditional moulding. Couldn't find anything I liked in Home Depot....

I agree. Crown moulding doesn't look right in every house. It can overwhelm a small house with low ceilings & it can clash with the design of a house.
There are also other types of trim besides traditional crown that might work better.

if you have a modern style house pretty much no crown works... but the above place is where I bought my trim molding in my house.
