Matching wood floors??
Hoping someone out there can help. A house we're looking at making an offer on has wood floors downstairs, but not upstairs. The flooring is about 15 years old and in great shape, but they don't have extra flooring. It is also on the stairs leading up to the second floor.
How difficult is it to match flooring? I'm guessing I'd have to restain all of the flooring to get a close match to the newly installed flooring? Is that a major PIA?
Thoughts? Thanks!!'

Matching wood floors??
So I'm guessing upstairs is carpet?? Personally, I like carpet for the bedrooms and hardwood for the living areas.
That said, I would call some flooring contractors and ask around... It's all about the staining, so I would imagine t wouldn't be that difficult.

Re: Matching wood floors??
Why does it have to match? They are two separate floors even, so if the 2nd floor didn't match the 1st floor, it wouldn't look out of place at all. My office has a different wood floor than my dining room on the same floor. I've seen plenty of dining rooms with different wood than other rooms, even connecting rooms, on the same floor.
If everything looks exactly the same, it gets boring, IMO.

Totally DITTO!
I think the matchy-matchy thing is "out of style"... look at how kitchens are being done now.. Black bases, white upper cabinets (just saw on HGTV today or yesterday and it looked FANTASTIC!)
Consider being open to not having to match...if floor plan allows it.

Matching wood floors??
We live in an expanded ranch. We have matching hardwoods on the BR side but totally different flooring on the living side. Different floors I would mix it up as previously suggested. But we did have to repair floors in our bedrooms when we pulled up carpet. The finisher took his time and matched the new floor perfectly to the existing floor. He just did some stain samples on scraps til he found the right color.

But the stairs that connect the 1st floor to the 2nd floor match the downstairs flooring. Wouldn't that look odd??

Matching wood floors??
My parents renovated their house and the second floor did not have hardwood- they went with bamboo flooring on the second floor but the stairs match the first floor as they always did- it looks good- the two materials blend but they do not match.

We have three different types of wood flooring in our home but they are all in the same color family. You can tell they are not the same, but they blend well together.

The only way to have the 1st floor, stairs, and 2nd floor match, is to only have one type of wood throughout the entire house. That is definitely not the norm. It won't look weird at all. It's actually safer to have the stairs a different material than the 2nd floor. That way, your eye notices the transition better, so you're less likely to trip down the stairs.

Matching wood floors??
you can obviously do what you like.
different wood or color on the 2nd floor wouldn't bother me. different wood in different rooms on the same floor, I don't think looks nice.
we did the same wood throughout both floors, the same color, including the stairs.
if your floors are site finished oak, it should be pretty easy to match.
if it is a prefinished flooring, its more difficult.

Re: Matching wood floors??
Idk I have no problems with things not being matchy matchy but I think it looks odd when there are different color wood floors in a house. If I were you I would probably carpet the stairs this way the two wood colors would not be connected to each other. Then do the upstairs wood in a similar color. I have hardwood upstairs and laminate in the basement, you can see the basement from upstairs, and it bothered me at first but now I don't really notice.

I agree, don't like mismatched wood floors, BUT I think if the stain is close and not such a stark contrast it's fine. I'd make sure you get the same type of wood, buy a sample and try a few different stain samples on a test piece of wood. Either way it's on a different floor so if it's not exact I think it's fine

Thanks for posting these. I'm getting ready to do my kitchen and really want wood floors, as the rest of the downstairs is all wood. However, I've been told by wood guys, who have been in business a long time, that it's nearly impossible to match the stain I currently have. As a result, I've been considering going with a completely different wood and/or stain. But after seeing these pictures can honestly say, I don't like the look.
Oh well back to the drawing board.

Matching wood floors??
I'm not a fan of mismatched floors, personally. I have different wood in my kitchen, which is next to the living room, and I can't wait to change the kitchen floor. But based on the responses here, not everyone feels that way.
If you really want them to match, any professional hardwood installer can buy similar wood and stain it to match existing. We did this a few years back when we installed hard woods in the dining room to match the existing floors in the living room (from the 60's). They are next to each other and match perfectly.

Were they really able to match without issue? This gives me hope. Did you restain the other floors to get a good match?

Yup. I'll see if I have a few pictures to send you. It may depend on the type of flooring you have, but he was able to order the same wood and size for us and stain it to match. I believe he had to sand a little bit where the new floors met the old but he did not restain the old floors.

If you hire a company to refinish the floors, they will be able to get wood to match. Our home has the same wood throughout (it's how it was when we bought it) but the bedrooms are a different color finish than the hallway, stairs and downstairs.

Same here-I don't like the seams between the different floors either. I prefer a continuous, seamless flow until you have a different type of flooring like when wood meets carpet.

We used them for our floors and they were wonderful. We did renovations on our first floor that included taking some walls down and needed wood for the spots where the walls were. They brought in the wood and rewove the floor so it would be seamless. They should be able to help you for sure!
