Questions to ask Pediatrician - My master list..
We are starting the search for a pediatrician soon and I have been working on a master list of questions based on past searches I did. Figured I would share b/c it may be helpful for others...
Pediatrician Questions
What are your hours?
Are any evening or weekend hours available?
How can I reach you in an emergency?
What happens if I have an emergency visit - can they squeeze me in?
What hospitals are you affiliated with?
What happens if the ped is out sick or on vacation?
Do they have separate waiting room(s) for sick kids?
What happens when I deliver my baby?? Will you see them in the hospital?
How often do you want to see the baby in the first year? (well-child visits etc)
Do you encourage parents to call for routine/non-emergency questions? (breastfeeding, sleeping, etc.)
Will you be available for discussions on behavioral developments; that is, tantrums, discipline issues, social development, etc.?
What if my child has a problem that you aren't comfortable handling?
Where do you stand on:
-breast-feeding
-feeding on a schedule
-homemade baby food
-getting baby to sleep
-antibiotics
-OTC meds (Tylenol, etc.)
-vaccinations (Will they delay or separate vaccines?)
Questions to Ask Yourself
Did you feel comfortable with the doctor?
Is the office conveniently located?
How long were you kept waiting? ______minutes
Did the waiting room and the examination rooms have toys and books to occupy your child?
Was everything clean?
How helpful were the nurses and support staff at the office?

When do you usually ask these questions? Do you schedule a meeting? Do they bill you for their time during the meeting?

I called the pediatrician I am interested in and the receptionist said we just make an appt. and can speak/meet with the dr. No fee or anything like that.
I am not sure if other drs. would have a different policy.
My friend met with her ped for about 15 minutes when she was pregnant to go over the questions and just meet with the dr. and see the office etc..

I made an appointment to meet with the pediatrician I was considering when I was 34 weeks. The office scheduled a prenatal meeting.There was no charge. It took me and my DH about 30 seconds to realize we both really like the doctor. He answered all of our questions in the first few minutes--really before I even had a chance to ask. Our meeting lasted about 15 minutes.
