Early Intervention Q
I am in the process of trying to get my DS evaluated for Speech and possibly other issues, I was told by the service coodinator that I had to go down to the Dep't of Health and sign paperwork and pick an agency. How do you know which agency to pick? TIA!

The service coordinator steered to an agency that ended up being a great fit for us (we ended up choosing them for DD's therapy after her eval). I would definitely get some recs here or from people you know so you have some ideas going in. We went for PT so I don't have a rec for you but it was a loooong list.

Re: Early Intervention Q
Really? Is this through Nassau or Suffolk? I know prior to having my son's evaluation, the initial service coordinator came to my house with all the paperwork and information. I thought this was standard procedure. It might be worth it to ask if they can come to your house to make it easier.
The list for the initial eval was really long and I had no idea who to pick so went with some agency pretty randomly. So not much help there. But it was fine and the evaluators were great. Good luck!

I think only Nassau goes to you home for all meetings. In Suffolk you go to them.

Suffolk will come to you if you need them to. They try to limit it to only those families who really can't make it to their office. Both counties are trying to cut back on costs. When we went through Nassau we were asked to go tot he office. When we switched to Suffolk they asked em to go there and I refused and requested they come to me.
To answer the OP, we picked an agency based on recommendatiosn fromf riends who had been through the process. Some great agencies are Little Village, Marie Solomon and All About Kids. I think they all do evaluations in both counties, but I'm not 100% sure. I was really pleased with the evaluator for speech from All About Kids. Very informative.

Re: Early Intervention Q
Thanks all! Good to know some recommendations...
Yes this is actually for Nassau county... I was confused, since my sister told me that the coordinator came to her house as well (this was over a year ago). I guess they changed their policies.

Re: Early Intervention Q
A good place to start is your pediatrician. Mine had a sheet of places they recommended, and picked one out that they work with a lot, so that is who I went through.

Re: Early Intervention Q
When I had it done they have me a big list. When I asked for a recommendation I was told they where not aloud to recommend a certain place. I went off friends recommendations. I used Kidz therapy which was great. My son goes to Alternatives for Children for preschool and I know they do outside evaluations as well. I got him evaluated for speech among other things. The Speech evaluation was the only one done in my house. It was through Kidz Therapy but you had an option for them to come to you or go there.

Re: Early Intervention Q
A service coordinator came to my house to fill out the paper work then she gave me a list of service providers to pick from to have the evaluation done by. I never had to go to the DOH. This was for Nassau county. I am a teacher so I was familiar with some of the service providers so I pick one of those. If your child is in school you can ask his teacher for recommendations.

We also had home visit. We were unsure about agencies, just picked one randomly but very happy. Our coordinator is from All about kids

I just went through EI with Nassau County and everything came to me. We didn't have a speech eval though. I used Kidz Therapy for the evaluation based upon a recc from my ped. I liked Kidz Therapy and was happy with their communication, etc..
