preterm labor at 28 weeks

my friend is 28w 5d and was sent to the hospital for preterm labor. She has been put on magnesium and antibotics to stop contractions. babys heart rate has dropped a few times in the process. While on the meds she was still having contractions. only about 1 cm dilated.

they now have stopped the meds and she is still having contractions.
any advise would be great .

Re: preterm labor at 28 weeks

I had preterm labor at 32 weeks (contractions every five min/2cm dialted)...kept me in the hospital for three weeks/and then on strick bed rest at home for another two....once they stopped the inital labor I was also put on magnesium, and then on procardia until I gave birth at 37 weeks.
Make sure she drinks LOTS of water-they said I was very dehydrated when I came in.

Its very scary but the best thing you can do is try and tell your friend to remain calm and hydrated. The most important thing is the safety of the baby. I didnt have any issues with the baby's heart rate but there were constantly checking it. I still had contractions here and there while I was staying in the hospital the first two weeks--it helps to lay on your left side (or half upright but leaning left/like your belly is resting on the left side of you) and make sure she pees at the slighest feeling. Sometimes I was like ahh i feel contractions! then the nurse would be like-go pee and then it would pass.

I I kept making sure I drank at least a little cup of water every hour so at least I know I was drinking-sucks to pee alot. This might be after she is off the magnesium- I remember being super loopy and out of it-I barely got out of bed when I was on it.

HTH - prayers to your friend!

thank you.

She is not allowed to drink or eat at the moment.
they took her off the magnesioum this am and then she said she started feeling the contractions more. They are trying to determine if the cause of the babies heart rate dropping for prolonged amounts of time.

preterm labor at 28 weeks

Just be there for your friend. I delivered my son at 30w and it was stressful and petrifying. I'd assume if the heart rate keeps dropping, they will do a C-section.

My son is a happy, smart and healthy 22 month old. It will all be ok. Prayers that your friends contractions stop and that the baby can cook a little longer.

thanks.

baby heart rate dropped again for another 3 minutes.
They say doc doesn't think baby is at risk right now but worst case scenario is to deliver .. getting more steroid shots

No advice for the preterm labor, but I delivered DS at 28 wks, 5 days and he is a happy healthy rambunctious 27 month old.

Prayers that they can stop the contractions.

Re: preterm labor at 28 weeks

i was just in the hospital at 28w for preterm contractions. magnesium doesnt do a thing for my contractions! they put me on an oral medication that finally stopped them and now i'm home on bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy

sounds like she's having all the right things done to try & stop the contractions! even at 2cm dilated they can still stop the contractions & keep her pregnant on bed rest for as long as they can! the only thing i would be worried about is the baby's heart rate dropping

Re: preterm labor at 28 weeks

Just stay positive for your friend. I had this with my first baby at 32 weeks and was in hospital for one week and put on magnesium. The magnesium made me feel so sick it was a very scary thing. I was given the steroid shots and put on procardia. I was to stop taking the procardia at 36 weeks and the day I stopped I went into labor again and my son was delivered via emergency c section and didn't have to go to NICU and is a perfect.

He was in the NICU for 7 weeks. Came home a month before his due date. Our stay in the NICU was uneventful, he was what they call a "grower feeder". We had no medical problems and he was there just to eat and sleep and be monitored.

We did not have any interventions prior to him being born early because I arrived at the hospital at 1030 and the little guy was born at 1105.
