Sibling classes
I live very far from my birthing hospital, NSUH. I saw Stony Brook offers free sibbling classes. Can you sign up for these even if SB is not your birthing hospital? My daughters are so excited about the baby. They are going to be 6 and almost 5 when the baby is born. They have some "interesting" thoughts on what they think they will do to be helpful. I thought it a good idea for them to understand how to hold the baby and how delicate a newborn is. Example: my older DD who is exceptionally nurturing has told me "it's okay if you sleep in the den mommy after your operation to have the baby, I will take the baby upstairs and she can sleep in my bed." So cute, yet so frightening. We are gently discussing what they can expect but I don't want to buzz kill either, thought a class would be helpful. Anyone have experiences to share with such classes? Personally I found NSUHs baby and breastfeeding classes were the biggest waste of money I ever spent. Got excited when i saw stony brook's sib class was free.

Re: Sibling classes
I don't know about these specific classes but I recommend it. I was 8 when my mom got pregnant with my sister. I loved the sibling classes. I still remember to this day!!

Re: Sibling classes
I would love to know about these. I wanted to take my son who is 5 but Winthrop only gives them from 2-3 on weds when he is in school and I am at work. While I would take him out of school early for it, I am trying to save all my days for maternity leave and don't want to waste it on that.

Re: Sibling classes
Here is the info on the sibling classes at Stonybrook:
Sibling Classes: New baby on the way? The Mother-Baby Unit of Stony Brook University Medical Center offers weekly classes at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays for parents and children preparing for the changes that come with a new baby in the household. Utilizing a film narrated by children, combined with demonstrations of how to hold, feed and change a diaper, this hour-long program is free of charge. Classes conclude with a tour of the newborn nursery, a question and answer period, and a "Big Sister/Big Brother" certificate. Classes should be scheduled at least one month prior to due date. To sign up, call (632) 444-4000.
