If you have a history of getting ill from the GD screening...
This is pregnancy 3. My last 2 pregnancies I had nearly passed out after drinking that awful drink. I never had GD in fact the opposite... I was crashing from the drink the doctor told me. I also suffer from low blood pressure which doesn't exactly help. They are making me take the test anyway. I'm older so it's more of a risk although I wish I could not do it.
This time I'm having the test at 11am and was told I can eat 2 hours before. I'm a coffee drinker, no sugar, but I assumed coffee may be a bad idea for the test and my crashing. I am thinking something like eggs with salt and pepper 2 hours before. I have no idea how to prevent that awful feeling. It's very similar to the about to pass out feeling I get when my BP falls too low or fast. In the past the office had me sit in the recliner that they have in the room where they have the fetal monitor. Maybe I should just ask that my legs be elevated from the start?

Is this the 1 hour test? That's not a fasting test, so if you have a history of not feeling well afterwards, I don't know why your OB tells you to fast. The point of the test is to see how your body handles sugar under normal circumstances, so fasting is not necessary.
The 3 hour test is fasting.

Re: If you have a history of getting ill from the GD screening...
My midwife told me to eat a protein breakfast, so I had two eggs, a piece of Ezekial bread with butter and some water. I skipped the coffee bc I love vanilla creamer and that is soo sugary.
She also let me drink apple juice instead of the drink at the place. I just had to make sure it had 50mg of sugar in it, and the Tropicana had 48, so I had one, and a sip of another. My body handled the natural sugar better. I have low blood sugar, so I was worried about passing out.

I didn't have a problem with it, but I'm a dietitian. I would suggest that your very well hydrated, and have a balanced breakfast, you do not need to fast for the 1 hour test, so I would say to have like eggs and a slice of 100% whole wheat bread with natural peanut butter. A little high fiber carb so you don't totally crash, and some protein. If you always have coffee, don't skip it, you'll only feel worse if your used to caffeine. If you drink decaf, it doesn't really matter either way.

Thank you. I'mso glad I asked. I will call and see if I can bring juice instead of that drink. And the info about what to eat that morning... perfect. I'm having exactly that. I hate passing out.

Just an FYI, the lady at the place gave me a hard time about the juice, but she called her supervisor and she said that some drs want that, so they let me. Your OB just has to write it on the script. Mine said something like "own juice okay."

I am having the test done in the doctor's office at my next OB appointment. I will call ahead of time and see if this is acceptable.
