Cord Blood?

Hello,

i have always said i would do the cord blood but now that i actually go through with it im doubting it..not really sure why lol

what are you opinions on this?

is this really a scam?
how can i live with myself if god forbid i don't do it and my baby needs it?

i have bags in my closet that add up to what it costs so i can i actually say i dont want to spend the money on possibly ever needing it?

we have life insurance so isnt this the same for my child?

im so torn! =(

Cord Blood?

I haven't done much research on it yet, but having a sister who passed away in the 80's at 11 months from Leukemia has me pretty convinced I will do it. With all the technology advances I feel that I would regret it if I didn't. That's just a gut reaction though - I haven't looked into it deeply yet.

Cord Blood?

No brainer. I don't believe it's a scam. We did it with DD 1 and will be doing it with DS 2

Cord Blood?

I have been doing a lot of research and it is definitely not a scam. There is a 0.04% chance that any child born will get a disease that can be treated with cord blood. There are cases where a child's cord blood cannot treat them for a disease due to the genetic defect also being in the blood cells. Right now there are approximately 80 diseases that can be treated using cord blood.
There are two banking options for cord blood private--You pay for the collection, preparation and storage and the sample is for your use only.
Public--collection, preparation and storage are FREE and the sample goes into the cord blood registry managed by bethe match.org (same organization that oversee the bone marrow donor registry) -the sample can be used by ANYONE who is a match to the sample.
My OB/maternal fetal medicine specialist recommends public donation as does the American college of obstetrics--personally, I am on the fence between public and private donation--I know I am doing one but haven't decided yet. I am meeting with a perspective pediatrician this evening and will ask his opinion.
FWIW a close friend of my OB was just treated for leukemia with cord blood and is now living a normal, healthy life so it is definitely useful to save the cord blood.

I want to do cord blood banking, BUT...I have read that "delayed cord clamping" has health benefits for the baby.

You cannot do both Delayed Cord Clamping and cord banking.

So its a choice between doing something a bit more healthy for the baby now or something that MIGHT be life saving later.

Cord Blood?

We did cord and tissue. Used CBR and had a great experience. Gd forbid we need it for dd it's there. I would never forgive myself if we didn't do it and it could have helped her.

Also, with match.org you have to check if your hospital participates:

It is not illegal to use your child's tissue-- there are just no mainstream therapies using mesenchymal stem cells from cord tissue BUT currently there are active clinical trials recruiting patients using stem cells from cord tissue. Cord blood stem cells (hematopoietic stem cells) and cord tissue stem cells (mesenchymal stem cells) are not the same as embryonic stem cells (pluripotent stem cells) they are actually different cell types- it is the embryonic stem cells that are a topic of controversy.

Here is a link for clinical trials using cord tissue stem cells:

Thanks. Yes, this. Right now it's being studied and years from now they will make a lot of headway. If I was going to do it I was doing both cord blood and tissue.
