Am I nuts to even consider this?
I would really like to deliver at Katz - LIJ. Here's the thing: the hospital is close to an hour away, without traffic. To add to the issue, I'm due at the very end of August, so summer/beach traffic would be added to the mix.
The more I think about it, the more crazy it seems. What would you do?

is your doctor affiliated with Katz?
I would play it by ear - if that is where you want to deliver it is do-able. You should just head to the hospital shortly after labor begins (as opposed to trying to labor at home for longer).

I delivered both my kids at NSUH Manhasset which is 45 minutes away (no traffic) from where I live. Both kids were winter babies. So, personally no, I don't think it's crazy!

I would have loved to deliver at Katz. It's about 30-40 minutes without traffic so I was nervous. Needless to say I ended in being induced and had a set day and time to check in to the hospital.
Even if you are far you will be in labor for hoursssssssssss (sorry, but you will). You will have more than enough time to get there.

With DD, I delivered 12 hours after arriving at the hospital. The hospital was 15 minutes away, but I remember being in quite a bit of pain during that drive. DH keeps telling me I'm going to give birth on the Belt Pkwy if I try to deliver at LIJ. LOL

Not necessarily! I know of someone who was in labor for maybe 2-3 hours at most before the baby was born. Barely made it to the hospital b/c of how fast she progressed.
I'm terrified to go into labor at work b/c that's 45 mins from my hospital. Hopefully I'll just go into labor at home!

This happened to me! I delivered at Stonybrook, but I live about 40 min away in no traffic and I work in the city. I was terrified I was going to go into labor while at work and give birth on the LIRR, but I took my chances. I ended up going into labor at home, but it progressed so quickly that I still barely made it to the hospital, DD was born less than 15min after I arrived. I was in labor for approx. 3hrs total and it took me a solid hour to realize it was the real deal. That being said, I'm really glad I went to Stonybrook and would do it again if I had another kid. I might just move in with my folks towards the end, since they live way closer.

Re: Am I nuts to even consider this?
You can't predict what will happen. I just had my 2nd dc.. Water broke at 11 pm n didn't have ds till the next night at 8:08 pm. I labored all night n day b4 he was born.
I think once u think labor starts get on the road n go but I kno the belt can b a nightmare.
On a side note I delivered at Lij n it was the best experience.. Clean, modern, n staff was amazing. I'm glad I delivered there. Good luck in whatever u choose

I would not do it. I would not want to be stressed out sitting in traffic in labor.
