stupid question about school ages
at what age does your child go to school that is paid for through the state? in ny is preschool covered? or only kindergarden? completely and totally clueless about this lol

Kindergarten is the first mandatory grade. Children start at age 5 (or at age 4 if they will turn 5 by the end of the calendar year). Some districts have universal pre-k... Which is usually a lottery system for acceptance. Pre-k is not mandatory so therefore districts don't have to offer it.
ETA: K is not mandatory... I thought it was. But that's typically when kids start public school.

I'm not sure Kindergarten is mandatory. All school districts have it, it's just a matter of whether it's full day or 1/2 day. I could be totally wrong. I know families that homeschool and they did not have to report to the state until the year their LO turns 6.
Our school district has UPK. We don't have a lottery, all kids turning 4 are before Dec 1st (?) of the coming school year are eligible. I think we registered around this time of year, I don't recall. I would call your school districts central office. They are very helpful. My DD goes 5 days a week for 2 1/2 hours, it's totally free.

Kindergarten up. But some districts offer universal perk. Many don't, but some do. I hear they are often by lottery. My district starts at K. You would pay oop for preschool/prek if you do not get universal prek.

Thanks. I thought K was mandatory bc I never heard of a kid skipping K. The cutoff is usually by the end of the calendar year though, right?

No it's not. Ds is a dec baby and does not make the cut. Some are even November.

The cutoff date is different for each district. Some are Dec1, some Dec 31 and maybe even earlier IIRC.
I know that in my district, the date is Dec31 but they allow you to hold back if you have a Dec baby... Up to you.

We have a lottery for UPK and our town only has 27 spots in the lottery.
Our cut off is 12/1. NY seems to have one of the later cut off dates in the area (and CT too). Many schools in NJ have cut offs of 10/1, and many in the midwest and south have 9/1 and 10/1 cut offs.
