when its not roses and unicorns
some babies sttn right away. some sttn at 2 months. some babies love to nap. they go down easy and at the same time every day. some babies sleep in their own room, in their crib and are content.
and some dont....
i know i cant be alone. my LO hates to nap. fights it to no other. CIO doenst work for many reasons. there has never been a night with longer than a 2hr stretch of sleep and lately we average 45min. we are exhausted. adults and baby too. we have tried it all.
college kids dont get rocked to sleep. 18 year olds dont cry every 2 hours and night. adults nap if they need it and wish they could do it more. i know it will get better but omg this is rough.
anyone else with me? when does it get better? 1yr? 2yr?

Re: when its not roses and unicorns
My son was like that. 1st it was his ears. Got tubes at 10 mos. Then it was just because he was disoriented and confused when he woke up. I finally said to him, you dont have to cry when you wake up in the middle of the night. If you need to go to the bathroom get up and go. Around 4-4.5 is when the waking and crying stopped, but I think if I had had that conversation sooner it would have stopped sooner

I hear ya. Every baby doesn't develop by the book or like any other baby. I just try to roll with the punches.

when its not roses and unicorns
My DS didn't sleep. When I was home on maternity leave I would call my DH and cry and he would say its not that bad.......In my mind it was. DS didn't sleep and cried 24/7. I ran back to work at 8 weeks. But DS was still not sleeping. Would wake up 3-4 times a night on a good night.
We finally let him CIO. First at 4 months. I wasn't ready and it didn't work. then again a bit later. It didn't work perfectly but we were getting more sleep. DS is 2 and still has bad night here and there and they tend to come in clusters. He will have a bad week and then a great few weeks and then bad again.
I have talked to DS now since he understands...I tell him I am right next door and doesn't need to be afraid.
I don't have any magic advice all I can say is that it does get better. But when it does....don't expect it to always be better. I did and I was very disappointed.

Re: when its not roses and unicorns
hang in there. of course, you're not alone.
naps have been a battle in my house for as long as dd's little life pretty much. she is almost 15 months old and I could probably count on my fingers how many times she has napped for longer than 30 minutes. it definitely makes me on occasion when I hear about babies and kids than nap for 2-3 hours. even when she takes a good nap, which is rare, it is exactly one hour and fifteen minutes. I actually remember ONE time ever that she napped for like 2 hours and no joke, I went in thinking something was wrong with her. I've come to just accept that she is who she is, and does what she does - and she's a cat napper. has been since birth, and will be forever. everyone said when she goes down to one nap, she'll sleep longer. nope. we've been at one nap for months. one 30 minute nap. and I can also count on my fingers how many times she has gone down for a nap without CIO. actually probably one just one hand of fingers! some days it's just a couple of minutes, but there have been days where she's cried it out for over an hour - for a 30 minute nap. it's absurd.
she sleeps "well" at night... but our "well" might not be what someone else considers good, or normal. she cries EVERY time she wakes. I don't go in any more... I've come to realize that it's just what she does. it's like every time she tosses and turns, she cries. sometimes it's just for a few seconds, other times it will be off and on for up to 15 minutes. it's just what she does. I keep hoping she'll outgrow it, but who knows.
as far as going down at night... I did CIO at a very early age, and we've had to revisit it once or twice... but she generally goes down without much of a fight.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that like another poster said, every baby/child is different - try not to even think about what other kids' are doing - bc every parent has a battle of some sort to go through. a lot more battle sleep than you probably think. I know it's exhausting... I have no advice except just try to hang in there and think about the sweet revenge you will get when they are older and want to sleep in and you'll have chores waiting for them instead, and remind them of their infancy

Re: when its not roses and unicorns
Sadly I am in this boat with you. I was spoiled by my son who took 2 naps until he was 2 and took one nap until he was 4. He slept through the night at about 6 months old. DD gave up all naps by 8 months and she is 4 1/2 now and sometimes still does not sleep through the night.

when its not roses and unicorns
My DS never napped well. Even as a newborn, he would be up for hours at a time and take small 15 minute cat naps here and there. He slept well at night though and STTN at 8 weeks. Something changed in him around 9 months and he stopped sleeping well at night. Now at 22 months old he is not only up 3-4 times a night, he is sleeping in our bed. I won't even talk about the fact that it sometimes takes us 2 hours to get him to sleep at night. Oh and for my kid, CIO is a joke. He could cry for hours if you left him. He is stubborn like his mommy.. Trust me when I say I feel your pain!! I just keep telling myself it has to get better one of these days!

Re: when its not roses and unicorns
DSnever took naps or sttn until he was 9/10 months and it still wasn't consistent until after he was 1. He's now 19 months and takes a 2 hour nap every day but still wakes up at night sometimes. I remember DH and I being exhausted and miserable almost every day! Now we have a 9 week old daughter who sometimes sleeps through the nirght akready and naps during thr day. It'll get better with time, I promise! All baby's are different and go about all duff things at different paces
