'Mom and Dad Are Sleeping In': Parents Leave Note for Kids in Attempt to Sleep

Desperate times call for desperate measures. And any sleep-deprived parent will tell you they are desperate for sleep indeed.

One mom from Pasco, Wash., decided to write her kids a note in an attempt to get some extra zzzz. Samantha Manville said that she and her husband aren't night owls, but on Friday night they found themselves awake at 2 a.m. Their kids -- Alexia, 10 and Liam, 8 -- usually rise at 7 a.m., so the parents put their heads together to come up with the note that might get them a little more shut eye.

The note specifically instructs their children "do not knock and wake up before 10 a.m. unless there is a real EMERGENCY!"

Manville said she and her husband tried to anticipate what would keep the kids at bay. "We brainstormed trying to figure out what questions would they have," Manville said. "What would make them knock on the door?"

The note reads, "To answer your questions:

- You can have cereal for breakfast

- Yes, you can watch TV / play Wii

- No, you may not go to your friends house

- No you cannot have a baggie of snacks from the pantry, those are for lunches (yes I mean those ones)

- You can have an orange for a snack. That means one (1) each!

Alexia - don't antagonize your brother.

Liam -- don't be a whiner . . . or at least not 2 loud [sic] one.

We Love you!"

So did it work?

"I looked at the clock when I woke up and it was 10:06," said Manville. "We made it."

But the note isn't going to be a regular thing. "It was a one-time thing and we got away with it, " Manville said. "But if the kids start to see it all the time they'll just start to ignore it."

We don't do notes, but our kids are pretty good with letting us get some extra sleep on the weekends. One of us will often get them a quick breakfast like cereal or and nutri grain bar and milk/juice, but then we go back to bed. They usually wake up around 7:00 and we try to relax or sleep until about 9:00.

My ds is 10 and he will come in and ask when I am getting up. lol.
He does get up and watch TV or play a game by himself though so no need for a note to tell him what he can or can not do.

I never woke my parents up at that age. It my parents where sleeping when I woke up I just watched TV. My parents have never been early birds on days they don't work. At 10 I was sleeping later then 7am.
My older son wakes up super early. If his younger brother is not up I tell him to either come in bed with me and I put on the TV or he goes and sits on the couch and watched TV until his younger brother wakes up. I hate waking up super early.

Chat Icon right?

From the OMG co-sleeping MOM (fill in judgmental crap here) my 5 yr old sleeps fine in her bed on her own without any clocks or indicators of 'stay in bed'. She wakes up, she stays in her room, if she ventures out, she knows where her juice is, her leappad, her crayons and blank paper. She plays by herself and will even snack.

I can't sleep in until 10am (never have unless I'm super tired) so I'm up by 9am any way. She can handle herself for 2 hours. She gets up, comes to OUR room to use the bathroom (like a 'hey im awake' sign) washes her hands and at MOST she'll ask us to put toothpaste on her brush but brings both items to us. Otherwise she leaves us be. If she gets bored she'll curl up with us.

Guess I'm just lucky.

eta: she can NOT turn on the TV. Not because I won't let her. She just doesn't know how. thank you google-TV lol

My boys are 5 and know what they can and cannot do. They will come in and ask if they can get on their kindles. We get to sleep in on most weekends
