The internet is a scary place!

I am fairly cautious with posting pictures of my son. We have a web album that is strictly for family. I have some pictures on facebook but I try to keep that as secure as possible (FB likes to undo your security) and I made sure that my smartphone pictures don't have that gps link attached.

Yet, yesterday, I decided to type our street name into google and was SHOCKED that in the search, pictures came up WITH our address linked to them. They were google+ pictures that were shared privately (it even said that) but our street address was linked to it.

I am NOT happy and have decided that I am going to tighten the reins so to speak.

What suggestions do you guys have because I like being connected to family but I don't like being so searchable.

What do you do?

I refuse to join google+ for this reason. Google owns everything and knows everything about you and they have worse privacy than FB.

just my street address. No numbers. Part of me wonders if it's because I'm signed in to my google account. But I don't like coming up in a search. I have really tried to limit how much I share, kwim?

Same. I have a gmail account but that's it.

Nothing appears when I googled my street name with or without the number.

Were you logged into Gmail/Google+ at the time? It's very possible that the links were actually just searching your Gmail/Google+ accounts and were not public results. Since Google links everything now, when you do a Google search it will also search your Gmail, for example. So before you freak out, check your settings and if you were logged into your universal Google login at the time.

Yes, I was. So I agree that it probably came up because of that. However, it was a good wake up call to privatize things further. But even if that is the reason, I really don't like that my address came up.

Interesting nothing comes up when I search aside from the usual trulia and those sites with neighbors addresses. No pictures of us or our neighbors.

I feel like as much as you try stuff will always get on there. Especially with Google.

I hired a company affiliated with Google for a company website. This company had already picked one out for me that they felt most represented my current signature. They had a list of signatures from before I was even on the internet that I could pick from if it wasn't accurate! VERY scary! Signatures from back in HS, variations from when my mom had signed my name and even my brother!

The internet is a scary place!

Sorry but this is going to sound dumb.

How does facebook, google or any social media GET your address? I just skip that question. There's never a need for me to put an address into anything that isn't going to bill me. If it asks for a zip code I put in a generic one for the city of SA. I also never put in my phone numbers, where I went to college or where I work. haha or even where I live but that's not hard to figure out considering my FourSquare check ins.

I get CONSTANT requests from FB up top asking me to finish my profile but I just close them or ignore them. Give us your phone number to keep your account safe, nope. I have 8 working emails that feed each other as back ups for online access points.

I never answer those fb questions "Birth month is first word, birth day is second and your favorite animal is the last word) ok so I just answered at least two security questions for the whole world? Nope, no thanks.

Even on here a question about wedding rings was asked. I won't tell you where I safely put them. I know the internet is broad. Everything we say is traceable. Every photo we post no matter how secure is out there. Hell even old sites can be resurrected.

Nothing is ever really deleted. Its the price we pay for being 'online'. I just don't take photos of AJ in front of my house with my phone, ever. I use my camera, take off the GPS, upload it to another site, then save it to my computer and then upload here. I never check in at her school, never post photos of her in her school shirt with name on it either.

But at the end of the day, its out there. What would it take for your family member who CAN see the photo to say "Hey there's my neice, she's such a sweetie. Look she's a brownie at Stallion Elementary, you know the one over off of Smith street. Yeah her parents walk her since she's just a half block up front the stop sign, isn't that nice" and.. done... all security provisions wasted. *shrug*
