Child Passports
Has anyone taken a cruise to the Bahamas without a passport for their kids? A travel agent said I only need DD's birth certificate, but the US Dep't of State's website says: "Every minor regardless of age traveling overseas must have a valid passport"
Since all travel documents must match, I'm now afraid to put down a deposit because DD doesn't have a passport, and if the name doesn't match (including typos) it goes as a cancellation with all the fees associated therewith to fix it.

Re: Child Passports
We just came back from a cruise to the Bahamas but all of our children have passports, but I think they are only required to have birth certificates.

No, you don't need a passport for a cruise to the Bahamas. If it's a closed loop cruise, you don't need a passport (and Disney is closed loop, meaning it starts in the US, ends in the US). Just a birth certificate. We just used our BC's in September without a single issue. All of us (I don't have a passport)

Re: Child Passports
We went on Disney dream last year and DH and I had passports but the boys were able to use just their birth certificates with no issues.
ETA: I think this is under the FAQ on the disney cruise website. Also if you are looking on the government website, make sure you check under cruises, there are different requirements for flights and cruises....

I shouldn't assume you're married, (or that you changed your name if you are) but if you are did you book your own ticket in your maiden name? How did that work with photo ID?

I do not think you need a passport but I would never cruise without one. If there is any sort of emergency and you miss the ship, or heaven forbid get sick or have to leave you must have a passport to fly home. While 99% of the time you are probably fine, but when traveling with kids you never know what might happen, or for that matter what could happen to you or someone traveling with you. Just something to think about.
As far as the state department...that goes to what I was saying. As long as you stay on the ship you would be ok. But if say a death in the family happens, you get appendicitis, get injured somehow and need to leave the ship overnight or fly home mid cruise. Without a passport you would have a problem as you would need a passport to return to the US or enter another country to get home.

Do you mean because your birth certificate name doesn't match the name on your license? My license is in my married name, I booked in my married name. They are really only looking at your first, middle and DOB to match you up to your BC. The customs officer didn't bat an eye.
IF it would make you feel more comfy, I would bring your marriage license. But I researched this up and down before we left since we booked on such short notice, and I was concerned about not having proper documentation. I didn't come across a case of anyone being denied entry back into the US after the Disney cruise was over because they had a birth certificate only, and because they were married and the names weren't the same. When you disembark at the ports, you only need your license and your Disney stateroom card, so the only time you are presenting your BC is at customs in FL after you get off the boat (and at check in with Disney at the Port)
