Re: Skinny baby.. Nervous
So, today I really amped up the table foods! I drenched a pancake in butter. He ate bites throughout the day. I also gave him a mum mum with butter on it. He likes butter. Does anyone know if that is ok for a baby ? They are not really supposed to have dairy before 1 year.

Thats tiny for his age. I would most def give the pediasure. Not sure why question the dr on this one?

I guess I questioned it because he is healthy and mentally and physically advanced. That's all.

Well if hes falling in percentiles, then thats a cause for concern IMO.

Re: Skinny baby.. Nervous
my son is tiny too. he JUST moved up to the 5th percentile at his 3 year well visit after hanging out at juuuuust under it since he was 2. he is a little over 3 years old & weighs about 28/29 pounds & is 36 inches tall
the doctor never seemed concerned... i've never thought about adding coconut oil for extra fat -- great idea!! he has been on whole milk since he was 1 for that reason

DS has been having dairy since 6 months old. You don't have to wait until a year for dairy unless you're worried about a milk allergy.

I think the issue is with giving a cup of cow's milk, not with butter, milk cooked in foods, yogurt, cheese, etc. People can react differently to different presentations of dairy. DD has a mild milk allergy (only whey bothers her) so she can do yogurt, small amounts of melted butter and well cooked hard cheeses.

Re: Skinny baby.. Nervous
My kids are tall but skinny. Right now, DS2 is 10th percentile for weight (13lbs) but 98th percentile for height (27in). He's following his growth curve so the Dr's are concerned.
DS1 was the same exact way.

Re: Skinny baby.. Nervous
I would take him to see a good pediatric GI. If he is progressing down the growth curve that is cause for concern. He might be diagnosed with failure to thrive based on his percentile ranks for height and weight over the course of time. A GI can refer you for an upper GI series to rule out anything structural. They will also palpate his abdomin feeling for structural problems. They will also provide suggestions for altering feedings with increased calories from a RX calorie pack. I would also call EI and request a feeding/ speech Eval. Does he have low tone? He also might have gastroparesis which could impact his intake of food/fluids. How many oz of formula/breast milk does he avg per day? How much food does he avg? If his intake is adequate he might have difficult ies with absorption.
I would be VERY concerned with a 27inch 15lb 9 month old and would want to investige why he's so underweight especially if his percentile rank for weight has been decreasing over time. If his intake of liquids are not adequate, I would also be concerned about dehydration.

They can absolutely have dairy prior to one year. What should not be done is to replace formula/breastmilk with cow's milk until age 1 bc formula/breastmilk has nutrients that baby needs until that point. I would be concerned if my baby was falling off the growth curve like that. Just for reference, and I know every baby is different and that you can't compare, but my 4 month old is 27 inches and weighs more than your DC. If you don't think you want to try the pediasure, I would increase his nutrtition/fat intake other ways, which it sounds like you are doing. Try introducing new healthy meals. There's a book, 100 baby foods (or something like that) that has good ideas for homemade baby food. Most things are easy to make.
GL! Our babies will always find ways to worry us, par for the course

Re: Skinny baby.. Nervous
I would definitely give him the Pediasure if my doctor recommended it.
Loading him up on butter is really not the way to go here. He needs nutrition in addition to just fats, which is why your doctor recommended you give him the supplement.
It might just be his body type, but dropping in percentiles, like others have said, is cause for concern. I would look into it further... if it's just the way he is, then that is awesome! But I would at least investigate a bit.

Skinny baby.. Nervous
I would def do what the dr says and be worried. A skinny baby is not an issue, a baby that drops or even jumps drastically on the curve is.
My DS is less than the 5% but he always has been. The Dr told me as long as he follows his curve we don't worry. If that changes then we worry.
