Sleep Question (w/poll)
If your infant child (approx 5mo) mostly slept thru the night, but woke up, wide awake at 4:30-5:00... what would you do?
Keep in mind, this wide-awake-at-4am thing does not occur regularly and you usually get up to get the day going during the week around 6am.

Sleep Question (w/poll)
We had that 5am wake up, babbling nonstop. Sometimes she would just go back to sleep. Mostly though we gave her a bottle, put her back in the crib and she would go back. There is no way I could be up at 4am for the day.

Sleep Question (w/poll)
DD did this from time to time when she was that age. I used to give her a bottle and 9 out of 10 times, she'd fall back to sleep.

Re: Sleep Question (w/poll)
So, I hate doing it but I usually will bring him into bed. I get up to get in the shower between 5:30-6:00 during the week so if he gets up at 4:30-5:00 it's pointless for me to rock him or feed him. He falls back to sleep when I bring him into bed. UGH! I feel like I'm starting bad habits... we have (or at least had) a strict no kids in bed policy.
He's 5mo so I have to believe he's too young to start "bad habits"... right???

Sleep Question (w/poll)
I've read bad habits can start at 6 months. That is when they learn manipulation. Who knows....

Sleep Question (w/poll)
At 5 months, my DS woke up for the day between 4 and 445. We'd nurse and I would hope that would put him back to sleep. Never did. I was just blessed with an early riser. I learned to make coffee my BFF.
Now at 14 months, he at least sleeps till 545-6. Better than 4!

Sleep Question (w/poll)
That young I would bring them into bed.
DS 2 does this from time to time (he's almost 22 months) and we let him fuss. He refuses to sleep in our bed (which is good because his older brother does not feel the same way). If we start his day then he's a monster!
There's no right or wrong answer.

Re: Sleep Question (w/poll)
At 5 months, when DS woke up that early he was usually hungry. I'd give him a bottle and put him back down in his crib to sleep.

Sleep Question (w/poll)
DD just did this today. Up at 4:15, I changed her diaper, nursed her, she fell back to sleep around 5:30 and I crawled back into bed for an hour. DD was up again at 7. Mornings like this throw me for a loop!

Re: Sleep Question (w/poll)
I coslept and when I didn't and if she was in her crib, then I'd bring her to our bed. why not.. we all got more rest.
The 'bad habit' stuff is a myth in my opinion and has other factors than just where they slept. AJ made it clear she wanted nothing to do with sleeping our bed at one point. No crying nothing. Hell I wish she WOULD sleep in our room to make things easier. It was us who had to readjust.
She always knew this was our bed and that was hers.
But 5am wake ups, we were up anyway. anything earlier and we'd nap while she played.

This is crazy to me - a 6 month old has no idea how to manipulate. They might see a cause and effect reaction, but to think through how they are going to make something happen is ridiculous.
If it is a once in a while thing, I would feed and bring into bed if your LO isn't falling back to sleep. I'm a FTWM and I love our snuggle sessions in the morning, even though it is occasionally earlier then I would like!

Re: Sleep Question (w/poll)
He's not hungry, I know that for sure, so I won't feed him. Guess he just wants snuggles from mama and who am I to say no

Re: Sleep Question (w/poll)
by that age we had a "get up" time which was 7am. We did sleep training so this was part of it. My DS woke up whatever time he felt like but we left him in his crib until his "get up" time. Sometime he would just entertain himself - others he would eventually fall back to sleep.
ETA - we used the methods in The Baby Sleep Solution. I highly recommend it - even at 2.5 he stays in bed if we are not ready to get him without any fussing/crying etc

Re: Sleep Question (w/poll)
My DD is 4 and a half months her usual wake up time is around 6am however she will sometimes wake up and be wide awake between 4am-5am. I will give it a few minutes and/or give her the pacifer as sometimes she will fall back to sleep. On most occassions I give her a bottle and then she goes back to sleep

Re: Sleep Question (w/poll)
