TV when you're not at home

Are your kids TV spoiled like mine and expect their fav show and episode to be on anywhere else besides our home?! Chat Icon
Damn DVR! LOL

I think my 4yr old DS is starting to sort of get it. I know we can use youtube and we also have the slingbox, but something it just doesn't work out.

Just thought of it since we're going away next month and just waiting to check into the hotel and expect when there's some down time for the kids to ask for a Peppa Pig show or Team Umizoomi. LOL

I do bring activities and we don't stay in the room all day, but at night or some down time they'll ask for the TV on and I'll need it so I can shower, make food for them, or just have a "me" moment to read, relax or get things together to go out for the day.

Can you bring a portable DVD player and bring some of their favorite DVD's?

We have plenty activities and other shows. We also put shows on the Ipad we download. Just was wondering if anyone else deals with this. Not really venting, but have to laugh about how kids are spoiled these days with TV. Chat Icon We just watched what was on.

I agree with this - I feel like my grandparents saying "I walked five miles in the snow" haha.... But, seriously, I grew up in a very rural area and we didn't even have cable as an option - if you were rich you had a giant satellite dish. We only received three channels and that was when the weather was cooperating -- so we watched what was on or we found something else to do.
When we go to my folks' house upstate, it's just as bad because my stepdad works for the cable company and they have everything on-demand or free payperview so the DCs watch anything they ask for.
We're going away later this month and will be bringing two tablets that have Netflix on them, plus we have some movies on the Ipad -- but I'm sure Paw Patrol is not on Netflix yet so I'm expecting at least one kid to be sad. haha.

OMG- I was just telling DH that my DD is so spoiled with On Demand that she thinks she can watch any show she wants anytime she wants.
We go to my FIL's house- they don't have a DVR or On Demand and she demands to watch Dora, or whatever
She has no clue what I mean when I tell her she has to watch whatever is on Disney Jr or Nick Jr at the moment.
And FORGET about watching commercials. What's that?
Please!

So spoiled by modern technology!!

So true! My kids have actually said, "Mommy, what's going on?" On those rare occasions that they have seen a commercial. Chat Icon

I'm grateful for video streaming on Amazon Prime on the iPad when we go away to a hotel since most hotels we've stayed at don't have Disney or Nick Jr.

I tried explaining to DS that when I was young, they only had cartoons on early in the morning and in the afternoon and that was that.

LOL Yeah AJ sees a commercial and will say loudly without moving from her chair..
FAST FORWARD!!!

I reply "Can't, its live"
Her: What?
Me: Its not recorded honey you're stuck watching it in real time
Her: Ugh, fine.

But as far as tablet and youtube. She knows she can watch but won't ask. She's learned I won't tolerate it. If we are out and about we rarely ever take the Tablet with us and if we do its only if we know she'll be somewhere she'll be bored (like doctors office, movies, waiting for it to start, etc). But when I say 'enough real life time' she knows I'm seriously.

I am pretty vocal about the dependence on technology and will tell my hubby to put his phone away or tablet. I think she's spoiled enough with DVR.

My friend invites us over for movie night and her son and AJ play on their tablets and its so annoying they are sitting RIGHT NEXT TO EACHOTHER but rather play on their tablets than play like we used to as kids. But his mother is just as bad. We turn on our movie and she's on her phone the WHOLE time "oh, wait what happened?" Me: put your phone down and maybe watch the movie? Her hubby yells at her to be in the present too.

Ugh tech!

ETA: But it does help she gets a dose of reality at auntie's house who doesn't have cable set up other than free channels and NO DVR at all or the ability to pause or back up! Chat Icon
