Newborn Sleep
Anyone ever have a newborn who fights sleep? My DD is 6.5 weeks old and since she's about 3 weeks old she fights sleeping! It's the strangest thing. She mostly does this during the day. It's like just as the eyelids close, she forces them open and starts moving the arms and legs again. I could understand older children doing this because they don't want to miss out on anything, but anyone experience this with a newborn?

Newborn Sleep
Sounds like the startle reflex. They fall asleep, lose muscle tone and starle themselves awake as they flail.
Do you swaddle? It really helps with thAt.

Re: Newborn Sleep
Have you tried swaddleing her? This really helps my ds stay asleep otherwise he keeps waking himself back up.

Re: Newborn Sleep
I agree with the swaddling. DS likes to have his arms free, but swaddling up his legs and midsection keeps him secure, relaxed and cozy.

Re: Newborn Sleep
I swaddle at night, but not for naps. She will go about 4 hours at night while swaddled. Do you swaddle for naps?

Newborn Sleep
I did, otherwise my child would not sleep. At all. I swaddled until 4 months, night and naps, then started one arm out, then both arms out, then switched to sleep sack.
They need sleep. If swaddling helps, swaddle her. Just make sure she has plenty of time to stretch her little arms and legs while awake

Newborn Sleep
i was gonna say swaddle too! i swaddled for naps and night time sleep when DS was small. they don't have control of their reflexes yet so their arms and legs wake them up.

Re: Newborn Sleep
Thank you for the suggestions! I swaddled and put on the white noise today and although she did not sleep the whole time, she stayed put for an hour and a half which was amazing and I think she seemed better after! Not as fussy or cranky. Thanks again!

I felt like DD spent the first few months of her life swaddled almost 24/7 ! It was the only way she'd be calm enough to sleep. So, yes, naps as well.

ME!!! My DS refuses to sleep. He is now 8 weeks old and is up the entire day with a few 20-40 minute cat naps in between. You would think he would sleep through the night but we only get about 3-4 hours. I am going to loose it on the next person who says "you have to sleep when the baby sleeps". I feel like saying yes thank you for the advice however MY KID DOES NOT SLEEP. We tried swaddling but he hates his arms tied down, we added additional heat to make sure he is warm, and tried feeding him a little more at night but nothing seems to work. I thought newborns were supposed to be boring since they sleep a lot...not this kid. So, no you are not alone.
