How do you keep little pieces from older DC's toys away from baby?
DD is almost 3 and got heaps of new toys for Christmas. Many of these are for ages 3+ and contain small pieces. DS is 11 mo and puts everything he can find in his mouth.
DH says we should just take all small pieces and put them "away", I'm assuming in the back of a closet never to be seen again. I feel bad for DD that she's old enough to play with these things but not old enough to know to keep them away from the baby.
Does anyone have any good suggestions? Do you just not let the older child play with the small pieces?

Honestly I just don't let older DD play with the too small pieces. If it's something I can sit and play with her supervised and put away afterwards out of reach I keep it otherwise it's not worth the risk IMO.

When I worked as a Nanny, I had this problem. I only let the older kid play with toys with little pieces when the baby was sleeping or I had her in the play room with the gate up (she could climb over it). Her parents let her play with the toys with small pieces with the baby around, but I was not comfortable with that.. The older child was only 4...

How do you keep little pieces from older DC's toys away from baby?
I hate toys/games with little pieces with or without a lil baby around. I end up tossing a lot out after my older kids leave them out after I ask them to put away. I glue on Barbie / doll shoes & keep Legos in a bin downstairs. My friends & family know i dont like anything that has lil or more then 5 pieces..lol

I had my older DS play with anything with small pieces at the dining room table. He was not allowed to play on the floor. And when we were done it either went back in the box or in zip lock bags and then on higher shelves in their toy closet.

Certain toys like that can only be played with during my littlest ones nap time. And everything has to be cleaned up when she wakes up.

Mine are 2 years apart - If my older one was playing w/ something dangerous for the younger one - I put the baby gate up in front of his bedroom door and let him play with it in his room.......He liked it b/c he had some time to himself w/o his little brother 'annoying' him and touching his stuff. I wouldn't tell the older child he couldn't play w/ something b/c his brother was too litle.
Honestly, now w/ the tenny tiny Lego pieces too, it's the only 'toy' I allow in their bedrooms. It's just easier to keep it contained.

We are switching stuff around. All the small Legos and small things are going in older dds room. All the big stuff in the play room. She will only play with the small Legos and such with us around and be put away when down.
It's a pain but dd2 is 9 months and everything from paper to ants to toys goes In her mouth.

I like the baby gate idea! That would keep her from wandering around the house with the pieces and leaving them everywhere.
