Croup?

Yesterday I noticed DS was a drop horse in the morning, but then never noticed it again. This morning he woke up again a little horse and he coughed. Not a lot of coughing, but that "barking cough." Well, he only coughed a few times so again I forgot about it till now bc I hear him in the play room. He only coughed twice and again it sounds like that "barking" cough. He's 4 years old. I don't see any other signs. No runny nose and he's only coughed a few times in the last 2 days. Normally I would brush it off to possibly a little cold he's getting bc of the weather changing, school, etc. It's just the bark in the cough I hear.
Thoughts? Other than that he seems totally fine. Could be a little nothing, the beginning of a cold...
Thanks

Re: Croup?

DD started with this about 10 days ago. I took her to PM peds (it was a Friday night) and turns out her chest was clear, just a bad phlegmy cough. Doc said she was a tiny bit hoarse but it wasn't croup. If it got worse, they would prescribe a steroid but it didn't get worse (she was even on antibiotics for an ear infection at the time)

10 days later ... still going Chat Icon it has been never ending!

I would go to the ped asap and fill a script for prednesolone for just in case.

Re: Croup?

Thanks! Not even sure if it's anything bc I haven't heard anything since earlier and he's not horse at all. Could be nothing.

If he keeps coughing, take to ped for eval.
DS got it 2 yrs ago. He was coughing horribly and frequently & needed steroid.
That being said, I would not give steroid unless you were 100% sure.

Re: Croup?

If you hear it during the day, I would say it's probably not croup. Croup tends to act up overnight- hence many a trip to PM pediatrics.

No, not at night at all and I haven't heard him cough again. I think it's nothing, but maybe a little cold or tickle in the throat. Thanks all!

Re: Croup?

steam really helps this cough. run the shower hot and steam up the bathroom (if you can dont run the bathroom fan) Stay in there with him for as long as you can, dd only usually last a few mins. Then i bring her outside or breath in the freezer cold air. Doing several times a day def helps! DD has had a croup cough. sometimes she needs medicine sometimes i try to treat on my own.

I think this is running rampant in my house right now. My 8mo old has had it for 6 days, been on antibiotics for ear infection for 3 and the cough is not getting better. My older two now have the cough. Now I know it's not croup.

Hope all our kids get well soon!
